{"id":31061,"date":"2017-06-21T16:04:57","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T20:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=31061"},"modified":"2017-06-21T16:04:57","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T20:04:57","slug":"i-wonder-if-the-protesters-know-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=31061","title":{"rendered":"I Wonder If The Protesters Know This"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/issues\/majority-lawmakers-sponsoring-15-minimum-wage-legislation-not-pay-interns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Free Beacon<\/a> is reporting today according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minimumwage.com\/2017\/06\/compensation-hypocrisy-on-capitol-hill-15-minimum-wage-supporters-hire-unpaid-interns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> from the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Employment Policies Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/epionline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Employment Policies Institute<\/a>, the majority of lawmakers sponsoring legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour do not pay their interns.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>However, the analysis conducted by the Employment Policies Institute shows that the majority of the lawmakers who have co-sponsored the measure do not pay their interns a wage at all. The study found that of the 184 lawmakers who supported the bill, 174, or 95 percent did not pay their interns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rep. Bennie Thompson (D., Miss.), Rep. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Betty McCollum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Betty_McCollum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Betty McCollum<\/a> (D., Mn.) and Rep. Robert Scott (D., Va.) pay their interns with a stipend. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Elizabeth Warren\" href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/faculty\/directory\/index.html?id=82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener\">Sen. Elizabeth Warren<\/a> (D., Mass.) and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sherrod Brown\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sherrod_Brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Sen. Sherrod Brown<\/a> (D., <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.1219998333,-80.6839998333&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=41.1219998333,-80.6839998333 (Ohio)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation noopener\">Ohio<\/a>) said they offer some stipends or limited financial assistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Brian Schatz\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brian_Schatz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Sen. Brian Schatz<\/a> (D., Hi.), <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mazie Hirono\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mazie_Hirono\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Sen. Mazie Hirono<\/a> (D., Hi.) and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tim Kaine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tim_Kaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Sen. Tim Kaine<\/a> (D., Va.) offer stipends or some assistance but they are only under certain conditions or to cover expenses like travel or housing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sen. Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.) said stipends are often available but they are not guaranteed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Bernie Sanders\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernie_Sanders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener\">Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I., Vt. ) is the only lawmaker who pays his interns at $12 an hour, which is still less than what the legislation demands for the private sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;If Democrats in Congress are passionate about raising the wage to $15, they should start by paying it to their own staffers,&#8221; said Michael Saltsman, managing director at the Institute. &#8220;It&#8217;s the height of hypocrisy to hire interns for $0 an hour, while asking private small businesses to pay $15.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Entry-level jobs, like unpaid internships, provide young employees with valuable experience\u2013experience that will be difficult if not impossible to come by if the minimum wage is hiked by 107 percent,&#8221; he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A minimum wage job is not supposed to actually support a person&#8211;it is supposed to provide an entry into the workforce for a young person. During the time a young person works at a minimum wage job, they are expected to learn some basic workforce skills&#8211;showing up on time, being courteous to people who may not be courteous to them, showing up every day, and respecting authority. When the minimum wage is raised to a certain point, the number of jobs available to young people entering the workforce will decrease and the hours that they will be available for them to work will also decrease.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the basic economics ignored by those politicians attempting to gain votes by supporting a minimum wage, I find it highly ironic that those supporting a minimum wage are not even paying their interns.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Free Beacon is reporting today according to a report from the Employment Policies Institute, the majority of lawmakers sponsoring legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour do not pay their interns.
