Politico<\/a> posted an update today on the hearings in the House Intelligence Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Members of the Donald Trump<\/a> transition team, possibly including Trump himself, were under U.S. government surveillance<\/a> following November\u2019s presidential election, House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes<\/a> (R-Calif.) told reporters Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nunes said the monitoring appeared to be done legally as a result of what’s called “incidental collection,” but said he was concerned because it was not related to the FBI<\/a>\u2019s investigation into Russia<\/a>\u2019s meddling in the election and was widely disseminated across the intelligence community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen intelligence reports that clearly show that the president-elect and his team were, I guess, at least monitored,\u201d Nunes told reporters. \u201cIt looks to me like it was all legally collected, but it was essentially a lot of information on the president-elect and his transition team and what they were doing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nunes said he is heading to the White House<\/a> later Wednesday to brief Trump on what he has learned, which he said came from \u201csources who thought that we should know it.\u201d He said he was trying to get more information by Friday from the FBI, CIA and NSA<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nunes described the surveillance as most likely being \u201cincidental collection.\u201d This can occur when a person inside the United States<\/a> communicates with a foreign target of U.S. surveillance. In such cases, the identities of U.S. citizens are supposed to be kept secret \u2014 but can be \u201cunmasked\u201d by intelligence officials under certain circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…It was previously known that Flynn\u2019s pre-inauguration phone calls with Russia\u2019s ambassador were intercepted by the U.S. government; he resigned last month after it became clear he misled his colleagues about the nature of the calls.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nunes has said Flynn\u2019s calls were picked up through incidental collection and said his committee is investigating why Flynn\u2019s name was unmasked and leaked to the news media.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obviously, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s phone calls with the Russian ambassador were taped and transcribed. Because he has talking to the Russian ambassador, that is not unusual. What is unusual is for the transcripts of those calls to be leaked to the press with his name on them. That is against the law. The person who did that belongs in prison.<\/p>\n

As this investigation continues, it is becoming obvious that candidate Donald Trump was under government surveillance during the campaign and after he was elected. That is a serious violation of his Fourth Amendment rights. This surveillance is one reason many Congressmen opposed the Patriot Act<\/a>–they feared the kind of political abuse of the law that the Obama Administration was evidently guilty of. There are many stories out there documenting the surveillance of Donald Trump and his campaign. I have not posted some of them because I am not familiar with the sources.
