It seems that the CBC PAC, whose purpose it is to raise money for potential candidates, spends more money on itself than it gives to candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The CBC PAC claims its mission is to increase &#8220;the number of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"African Americans\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_Americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">African Americans<\/a> in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889 (United%20States%20Congress)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">U.S. Congress<\/a>&#8221; and to &#8220;support non-Black candidates that champion our interests, and promote African American participation in the political process-with an emphasis on young voters,&#8221; according to its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbcpac.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The PAC spent hundreds of thousands throughout the 2016 election cycle on administrative expenses that included bills for lavish trips that were paid by the committee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A <a href=\"http:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?201603179009770150\" target=\"_blank\">$5,000<\/a> payment was made in January 2016 from the PAC to the Buccaneer Hotel located in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=17.7397222222,-64.7388888889&amp;spn=0.25,0.25&amp;q=17.7397222222,-64.7388888889 (Saint%20Croix%2C%20U.S.%20Virgin%20Islands)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">St. Croix, Virgin Islands<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebuccaneer.com\/accolades-en.html\">one<\/a> of the &#8220;world&#8217;s top 50 tropical resorts.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Later, on March 21, 2016, the PAC made another payment to a resort in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Virgin Islands\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=18.0936111111,-64.8302777778&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=18.0936111111,-64.8302777778 (Virgin%20Islands)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Virgin Islands<\/a>. This time, the money went towards a stay at the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriott.com\/hotels\/travel\/stxbr-renaissance-st-croix-carambola-beach-resort-and-spa\/\" target=\"_blank\">one-of-a-kind<\/a>&#8221; Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort and Spa also located in St. Croix. The Renaissance is situated &#8220;among the foothills of a lush tropical rainforest and only steps away from the pristine sands of Estate Davis Bay.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The PAC spent <a href=\"http:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?201607159020605313\" target=\"_blank\">$820<\/a> on taxicabs while in the Virgin Islands. More than <a href=\"http:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?201607159020605314\" target=\"_blank\">$2,000<\/a> was spent at Sweeny&#8217;s St. Croix Tours in the town of Christiansted, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gotostcroix.com\/guided-tours\/sweenys-st-croix-safari-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\">considered<\/a> &#8220;the most beautiful town in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"West Indies\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=21.9833,-79.0333&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=21.9833,-79.0333 (West%20Indies)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">West Indies<\/a>.&#8221; Sweeny&#8217;s provides an open-air bus for its guests as they embark on safari tours of the island. More than <a href=\"http:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?201604159012434970\" target=\"_blank\">$4,500<\/a> was also spent by the PAC on catering at Un Amore, an Italian restaurant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The group&#8217;s largest expenses were made in New York and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Washington, D.C.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article notes a number of expenditures on various luxury hotels and spas in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">New York City<\/a> and California.<\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Benjamin Branch, who provides administrative and managerial consulting services to the PAC, pocketed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/expends\/vendor.php?year=2016&amp;vendor=Branch%2C+Benjamin\">nearly<\/a> $177,000 from the group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/pacs\/expenditures.php?cycle=2016&amp;cmte=C00147512\">put<\/a> $283,100 total towards administrative expenses while $127,000 went towards fundraising purposes. The PAC contributed just $91,000 to federal candidates, according to overall data of the PAC from the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Center for Responsive Politics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_for_Responsive_Politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Center for Responsive Politics<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The CBC PAC did not respond to requests for comment on its expenditures by press time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wonder how many well-meaning people who might not have a lot of extra money donated to this PAC. While I don&#8217;t necessarily have the same goals as the CBC PAC, they do have a right to exist and to put forward their agenda. However, if I were a donor, I think I would give any money I had directly to the candidates I supported. The questionable priorities in their spending habits may be perfectly legal, but they are definitely not doing all that they should to advance their cause.
