On Monday, a website called <a href=\"http:\/\/aleteia.org\/blogs\/deacon-greg-kandra\/theyre-shoving-these-crosses-in-our-faces-controversy-over-villanovas-plans-for-pedestrian-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\">aleteia.org<\/a> posted a story about some recent events in Radnor Township, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New Jersey\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0,-74.5&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=40.0,-74.5 (New%20Jersey)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New Jersey<\/a>, home of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Villanova University\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.03771,-75.33755&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.03771,-75.33755 (Villanova%20University)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Villanova University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the story:<\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>As part of a $285 million expansion project, Villanova University is erecting a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Footbridge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Footbridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">pedestrian bridge<\/a> that will run over <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.0367,-76.3122&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.0367,-76.3122 (Philadelphia%20and%20Lancaster%20Turnpike)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Lancaster Avenue<\/a> \u2014\u00a0something the township required for safety reasons to allow safe passage from the campus on one side of the road to the other.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>But controversy has ensued over the design of the bridge, specifically the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Catholic university\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Catholic university<\/a>\u2019s plan to erect 4-foot, 7-inch metal crosses atop stone pillars on either side of the structure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Some Radnor Township residents say such an audacious show of religion has no place in a township of many faiths.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cI think they are overstepping their sense of ecumenism to shove these crosses in our faces,\u201d said Sara Pilling, a long-time township resident who lives a couple of blocks from the university.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Villanova officials, however, say the school is well within its right to include the crosses, which will be on school property and which the university will fund.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cOn every building on campus there\u2019s a cross,\u201d said the Rev. Peter Donohue, president of Villanova. \u201cI understand people\u2019s sensitivities but it\u2019s just something we\u2019ve always done. It\u2019s just part of who we are. We are a faith-based institution.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pedestrian bridge is being constructed on University property with University money. It is a Catholic University.<\/p>\n<p>The article includes an update:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Radnor Township\u00a0Board of Commissioners late Monday approved a controversial pedestrian bridge that would link Villanova University\u2019s main campus with a planned expansion on the southern side of Lancaster Avenue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The 6-0 decision, with board President Elaine P. Schaefer abstaining, came after an hour of debate and discussion over a key element of the bridge\u2019s design:\u00a04-foot, 7-inch metal crosses atop stone pillars on opposite sides of the structure. In the end, the board concluded that it did not have the authority to regulate or prohibit the crosses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My understanding from the article is that Villanova University is building the pedestrian bridge and paying for the pedestrian bridge.
