At the time these things may not have seemed important, but in view of recent events, they need to be re-examined.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"PJ Media\" href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/trending\/2017\/02\/15\/surprise-at-the-end-obama-administration-gave-nsa-broad-new-powers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">PJ Media<\/a> reported on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/12\/us\/politics\/nsa-gets-more-latitude-to-share-intercepted-communications.html?platform=hootsuite&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> story from January 12, 2017,.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reported:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"259\" data-total-count=\"259\"><strong>In its final days, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Presidency of Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Obama administration<\/a> has expanded the power of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Security Agency\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.1088888889,-76.7713888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=39.1088888889,-76.7713888889 (National%20Security%20Agency)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">National Security Agency<\/a> to share globally intercepted personal communications with the government\u2019s <a title=\"List of agencies.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/index.php\/intelligence-community\/members-of-the-ic\">16 other intelligence agencies<\/a> before applying privacy protections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"397\" data-total-count=\"656\"><strong>The new rules significantly relax longstanding limits on what the N.S.A. may do with the information gathered by its most powerful surveillance operations, which are largely unregulated by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">American<\/a> wiretapping laws. These include collecting satellite transmissions, phone calls and emails that cross network switches abroad, and messages between people abroad that cross domestic network switches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"320\" data-total-count=\"976\"><strong>The change means that far more officials will be searching through raw data. Essentially, the government is reducing the risk that the N.S.A. will fail to recognize that a piece of information would be valuable to another agency, but increasing the risk that officials will see <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Personally identifiable information\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personally_identifiable_information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">private information<\/a> about innocent people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"320\" data-total-count=\"976\">PJ Media states:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Let&#8217;s call the roster of the bad guys:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Attorney General <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Loretta Lynch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loretta_Lynch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Loretta E. Lynch<\/a> signed the new rules, permitting the N.S.A. to disseminate \u201craw signals intelligence information,\u201d on Jan. 3, after the director of national intelligence, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"James R. Clapper\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_R._Clapper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">James R. Clapper Jr.<\/a>, signed them on Dec. 15, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3283349-Raw-12333-surveillance-sharing-guidelines.html\">a 23-page, largely declassified copy of the procedures<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"365\" data-total-count=\"1648\"><strong>Previously, the N.S.A. filtered information before sharing intercepted communications with another agency, like the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Central Intelligence Agency\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.951796,-77.146586&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.951796,-77.146586 (Central%20Intelligence%20Agency)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">C.I.A.<\/a> or the intelligence branches of the F.B.I. and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Drug Enforcement Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dea.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Drug Enforcement Administration<\/a>. The N.S.A.\u2019s analysts passed on only information they deemed pertinent, screening out the identities of innocent people and irrelevant personal information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"200\" data-total-count=\"1848\"><strong>Now, other intelligence agencies will be able to search directly through raw repositories of communications intercepted by the N.S.A. and then apply such rules for \u201cminimizing\u201d privacy intrusions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"200\" data-total-count=\"1848\">This is essentially a land mine placed in the path of the Trump Administration by the Obama Administration. If I told you how angry I was about this, this blog would no longer be family-friendly.\u00a0 I hope Americans can put partisan politics aside and realize how damaging this is to the country and to the Fourth Amendment rights of all Americans. Former <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"WhiteHouse.gov\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">President Obama<\/a> has gone out of his way to make things difficult for President Trump. This is not appropriate. It is petty, vindictive and unpatriotic. If laws were not broken, there cannot be a legal penalty, but there should be a public censure of some sort. I have always felt that former President Obama did not understand America.
