<\/a>In case you are wondering what this is all about, Vice-President-elect<\/a> Mike Pence<\/a> took his family to see “Hamilton” Friday night. He and his family were booed as they entered the theater and lectured on diversity by the cast of Hamilton as they left. The whole episode was inappropriate and classless. The man wanted to take his family to a play–he did not need to be harassed.<\/p>\nThere is a bit of irony in this situation. In March of this year, CBS News<\/a> posted the following headline:<\/p>\n The article reports:<\/p>\n One critic said \u201cHamilton\u201d takes a story that \u201cvalorizes dead white guys\u201d and replaces it with black, Latino and multi-ethnic performers playing America\u2019s founding fathers.<\/strong><\/p>\n But as the blockbuster musical looks to expand to other cities, the casting notice with its call for \u201cnon-white\u201d performers looks problematic to civil rights attorney Randolph McLaughlin.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWhat if they put an ad out that said, \u2018Whites only need apply?\u2019\u201d said McLaughlin, of the Newman Ferrara Law Firm. \u201cWhy, African-Americans<\/a>, Latinos, Asians would be outraged.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n McLaughlin believes the ad violates the New York City Human Rights Law<\/a>, which makes it unlawful \u201cfor an employer\u2026 because of the actual written or perceived\u2026 race of any person, to discriminate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cYou cannot advertise<\/a> showing that you have a preference for one racial group over another,\u201d McLaughlin said. \u201cAs an artistic question \u2013 sure, he can cast whomever he wants to cast, but he has to give every actor eligible for the role an opportunity to try.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n That is also the policy of Actors Equity<\/a>, the Broadway union, which says, \u201c\u2026producers agree that auditions for all productions\u2026 will be conducted in such a manner as to provide full and fair consideration to actors of all ethnicities.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n …The city Commission on Human Rights<\/a> said it has not received a complaint about the ad, and would not say if it is investigating.<\/strong><\/p>\n In recent years, the city has fined restaurants for advertising for \u201cbusboys\u201d and \u201cwaitresses\u201d instead of \u201cbus help\u201d and \u201cwait staff.\u201d In this case, a source told CBS2\u2019s Aiello the commission would likely work with the \u201cHamilton\u201d production team to help it comply with city law if it takes issue with the ad.<\/strong><\/p>\n People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Diversity?
