This is the First Amendment<\/a> of the U.S. Constitution<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion<\/a>, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress<\/a> of grievances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is nothing here about separation of church and state–that concept was based on a letter from Thomas Jefferson<\/a> to the Danbury Baptist Association<\/a> in1802. He was reiterating the fact that the government of America<\/a> was not going to establish a national religion. He was assuring the group that they would be free to practice their religion and live their lives accordingly.<\/p>\n
