{"id":29091,"date":"2016-08-25T13:34:11","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T17:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=29091"},"modified":"2016-08-25T13:34:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-25T17:34:11","slug":"the-high-cost-of-solar-energy-that-isnt-solar-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=29091","title":{"rendered":"The High Cost Of Solar Energy That Isn&#8217;t Solar Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 12, <a href=\"http:\/\/dailysignal.com\/2016\/08\/12\/consumers-pay-because-regulators-allow-natural-gas-use-at-this-solar-plant\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=thf-tw\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Signal<\/a> posted an article about <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ivanpah Solar Power Facility\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.57,-115.47&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=35.57,-115.47 (Ivanpah%20Solar%20Power%20Facility)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System<\/a>, a taxpayer-subsidized solar power plant in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.0,-120.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=37.0,-120.0 (California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">California<\/a>\u2019s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mojave Desert\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=36.1697222222,-117.089166667&amp;spn=2.5,2.5&amp;q=36.1697222222,-117.089166667 (Mojave%20Desert)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Mojave Desert<\/a>. Most <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Solar Power\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wikinvest.com\/industry\/Solar_Power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikinvest\">solar power plants<\/a> (if not all) are taxpayer-subsidized, so that is not unusual. What is unusual is what the power plant has had to do to compensate for the desert weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Ivanpah is different. It uses mirrors to concentrate sunlight for generating steam that then drives turbines. These turbines produce energy in a similar fashion to that of traditional coal, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Natural gas\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">natural gas<\/a>, or nuclear <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Power station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">power plants<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>However, Ivanpah has a problem those technologies don\u2019t: intermittency. Meaning the sun doesn\u2019t always shine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>For Ivanpah, this is an even bigger problem than it is for plants that use solar cells, because at night the temperature in the desert falls dramatically and the water cools down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>So, the water must be reheated the next morning before <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Electricity generation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electricity_generation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">power production<\/a> can resume. Instead of relying on the sun to reheat the water, the Ivanpah plant burns natural gas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A true description of Ivanpah, then, is that it is a hybrid solar-<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Fossil-fuel power station\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fossil-fuel_power_station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">natural gas power plant<\/a>. The electricity is not entirely solar produced, yet it is sold at the higher prices regulators allow for solar power, a benefit worth millions of dollars per year to Ivanpah\u2019s owners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is how the solar scam works:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>That\u2019s how Ivanpah hits the \u201cbad policy\u201d trifecta that is all too common in today\u2019s heavily subsidized renewable energy markets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rich consortium gets huge subsidies from taxpayers to build a plant. Check.\u00a0 Regulators OK a contract that forces consumers to pay four to five times the going rate for its product. Check. And the product actually is nowhere near as \u201cgreen\u201d as people thought it\u2019d be. Check.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The inconvenient truth is that Ivanpah uses a lot of natural gas to generate \u201csolar\u201d electricity, and neither the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"California Energy Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energy.ca.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">California Energy Commission<\/a> nor the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of Energy\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8869916667,-77.026025&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8869916667,-77.026025 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20Energy)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">U.S. Department of Energy<\/a> seems to care enough to come clean about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am not opposed to solar energy. What I am opposed to is government meddling in the free market to the point where healthy competition is prevented from developing a product to generate energy that would be clean, efficient, and cheap enough to use. Since the dawn of science, scientists have been looking for a perpetual motion machine, and I wonder if the search for green energy is going to have the same amount of success. There are laws of physics involved in generating energy that control the process regardless of what the government, the power companies, or the consumers may want.
