{"id":29047,"date":"2016-08-17T17:39:28","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T21:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=29047"},"modified":"2016-08-17T17:39:28","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T21:39:28","slug":"finally-some-common-sense-comes-to-our-fishing-quotas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=29047","title":{"rendered":"Finally Some Common Sense Comes To Our Fishing Quotas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 3, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Massachusetts\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=42.3,-71.8&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=42.3,-71.8 (Massachusetts)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Massachusetts<\/a> newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southcoasttoday.com\/news\/20160803\/sea-change-noaa-to-shift-fish-surveys-to-commercial-boats\" target=\"_blank\">South Coast Today<\/a> posted an article about changes in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Fish stock\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fish_stock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">fish stock<\/a> surveys.<\/p>\n<p>The article reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In what one advocate called \u201ca potential sea change\u201d for the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Commercial fishing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commercial_fishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">commercial fishing<\/a> industry, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">NOAA<\/a> Fisheries announced intentions Tuesday to shift all or part of long-controversial stock surveys from its Bigelow <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Research vessel\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Research_vessel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">research vessel<\/a> to commercial boats, saying a transition over the next five years could bring \u201cgreater shared confidence\u201d in survey results.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe have to learn to work better with the (commercial fishing) industry \u2014 we have to open up better lines of communication,\u201d Dr. Bill Karp, director of NOAA\u2019s Northeast Fisheries Science Center in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Woods Hole, Massachusetts\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.5266666667,-70.6630555556&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=41.5266666667,-70.6630555556 (Woods%20Hole%2C%20Massachusetts)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Woods Hole<\/a>, said of the transition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>How fish stocks are measured has been one of the biggest points of contention for years between governmental regulators and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Fishing industry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fishing_industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">commercial fishermen<\/a>, as survey results affect seasonal catch limits, quotas for various species and more. The latest questions about NOAA\u2019s Henry R. Bigelow research ship arose this spring, for example, when maintenance problems delayed NOAA\u2019s spring survey from April to June.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Don Cuddy, program director for the Center for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sustainable fishery\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sustainable_fishery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Sustainable Fisheries<\/a> in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New Bedford, Massachusetts\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.6361111111,-70.9347222222&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=41.6361111111,-70.9347222222 (New%20Bedford%2C%20Massachusetts)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New Bedford<\/a>, said fishermen also have felt the Bigelow is unable to accurately count \u201cflatfish,\u201d such as yellowtail flounder, because of the type of gear it tows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bottom line here is very simple&#8211;the commercial fishermen know a whole lot more about the fish population than the government does. Most commercial fishermen have spent their entire lives fishing and understand things the government has not even considered. Most commercial fishermen are conscious of the environment because they realize that if they overfish a certain type of fish, they lose their livelihood. Life was better all the way around before the government began to attempt to take control of the commercial fishing industry. All they are succeeding in doing is putting small family fishing boats out of business, and those family fishing boats are the conscientious fisherman who do not overfish.
