{"id":2897,"date":"2011-04-20T20:43:24","date_gmt":"2011-04-20T20:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2897"},"modified":"2011-04-20T20:43:24","modified_gmt":"2011-04-20T20:43:24","slug":"how_much_do_federal_regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2897","title":{"rendered":"How Much Do Federal Regulations Cost You ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/04\/19\/the-hidden-tax-report-estimates-regulation-costs-economy-1-75-trillion\/#ixzz1JzQvCdfH\">Daily Caller<\/a>&nbsp;posted an article about the cost to every American of Washington&#8217;s regulations on businesses and state and local governments.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wayne Crews, vice president for policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute studied this&nbsp;and found a report stating that regulation cost $1.75 trillion in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Crews points&nbsp;out in his report that companies pass the cost of complying with complex regulations on to the consumer.&nbsp; He also points out that Washington can raise money through regulation without having to pass unpopular tax bills.<\/p>\n<p>The article in the Daily Caller points out some of the current overregulation:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 In 2010, federal agencies issued 3,573 final rules.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 While agencies issued 3,573 final rules, Congress passed and the president signed into law a comparatively &#8220;few&#8221; 217 bills. Considerable lawmaking power is delegated to unelected bureaucrats at agencies, an abuse addressed recently in proposals such as the REINS Act.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Proposed rules in the Federal Register have surged from 2,044 in 2009 to 2,439 in 2010, a jump of 19.3 percent.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Of the 4,225 rules now in the regulatory pipeline, 224 are &#8220;economically significant&#8221; meaning they wield at least $100 million in economic impact&#8211;this is an increase of 22 percent over 2009&#8217;s 184 rules.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Given 2010&#8217;s government spending (outlays) of $3.456 trillion, the regulatory &#8220;hidden tax&#8221; of $1.75 trillion stands at an unprecedented 50.7 percent of the level of federal spending itself.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Regulatory costs exceed all 2008 corporate pretax profits of $1.463 trillion.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Regulatory costs dwarf corporate income taxes of $157 billion.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Regulatory costs tower over the estimated 2010 individual income taxes of $936 billion by 87 percent&#8211;nearly double the level.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; COLOR: black; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u2022 Regulatory costs of $1.75 trillion absorb 11.9 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), estimated at $14.649 trillion in 2010.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"LINE-HEIGHT: normal;
