This will be the first time the Olympics honors the memory of the Israeli Olympic athletes killed in a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Palestinian political violence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestinian_political_violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Palestinian terror<\/a> attack in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Called the Place of Mourning, the Olympic Village memorial site honors the memory of the Israelis as well as four other people who were killed during <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Olympic Games\" href=\"http:\/\/www.olympic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Olympic Games<\/a>. The others are the German policeman who was killed in a failed rescue attempt in Munich; two victims of a bombing at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"1996 Summer Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1996_Summer_Olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta<\/a> and a Georgian athlete who died in an accident at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"2010 Winter Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_Winter_Olympics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">2010 Winter Olympics<\/a> in Vancouver.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano, widows of two of the murdered Israeli athletes, had been campaigning for years to have the Israelis officially commemorated. They were unsuccessful until <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Thomas Bach\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Bach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Thomas Bach<\/a>, of Germany, became <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"International Olympic Committee\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=46.5180555556,6.59694444444&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=46.5180555556,6.59694444444 (International%20Olympic%20Committee)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">IOC<\/a> president in September 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;A \u201cmoment of reflection\u201d for the Munich 11 will be held during the Games\u2019 closing ceremony on Aug. 21.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to the IOC commemorations, an August 14 ceremony for the Israeli 11 at Rio City Hall will feature the widows of weightlifter <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Yossef Romano\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yossef_Romano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Yossef Romano<\/a> \u2014 who was kidnapped, castrated and murdered by the terrorists \u2014 and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Andre Spitzer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andre_Spitzer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Andre Spitzer<\/a>, a fencing coach, lighting 11 candles, according to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Folha de S. Paulo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.folha.com.br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Folha de S. Paulo<\/a> newspaper. Officials from the Israeli Olympic Committee and the Israeli<\/strong> <strong>Consulate will lead the commemoration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had the privilege of hearing Dan Alon, a member of the 1972 Israeli Olympic Fencing Team who survived the attack, speak many years ago. He has an amazing story.
