{"id":28768,"date":"2016-07-12T12:06:28","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=28768"},"modified":"2016-07-12T12:06:28","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:06:28","slug":"the-law-of-the-sea-treaty-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=28768","title":{"rendered":"The Law of the Sea Treaty in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In June 12, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=14258\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> a letter from a group of retired senior military leaders stating their reasons for opposing The Law of the Sea Treaty.\u00a0 The letter lists in detail their reasons for opposing the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Treaty\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">treaty<\/a>. The treaty was not ratified. Recent events illustrate the wisdom of not <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ratification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ratification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">ratifying<\/a> the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>Today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org\/2016\/07\/12\/china-is-preparing-for-conflict-so-must-we\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Center for Security Policy<\/a> posted a small article about the actual usefulness of the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>This is the article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"International arbitration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_arbitration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">International Arbitration<\/a> Tribunal of the Law of the Sea Treaty has just ruled that one of LOST\u2019s member states, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"China\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.9166666667,116.383333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=39.9166666667,116.383333333 (China)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Communist China<\/a>, has violated the rights of another, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Philippines\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=14.5833333333,121.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=14.5833333333,121.0 (Philippines)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">the Philippines<\/a>. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Beijing\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.9138888889,116.391666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=39.9138888889,116.391666667 (Beijing)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Beijing<\/a> was found to have no valid claim to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"South China Sea\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=12.0,113.0&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=12.0,113.0 (South%20China%20Sea)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">South China Sea<\/a>, despite its manufacturing and arming of islands throughout the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Chinese have imperiously rejected the ruling and are now in a position forcibly to resist any effort to enforce it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>As I and other critics of the Law of the Sea Treaty have long argued, its restrictions only apply to law-abiding nations. Were the U.S. to join, it would impose real burdens <em>on us<\/em>. But it cannot on countries like China that routinely breach their treaty obligations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The stage is being inexorably set for conflict in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Pacific Ocean\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=0.0,-160.0&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=0.0,-160.0 (Pacific%20Ocean)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Western Pacific<\/a>. China is preparing for it. And so must we.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have been warned.
