{"id":28429,"date":"2016-06-03T13:21:02","date_gmt":"2016-06-03T17:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=28429"},"modified":"2016-06-03T13:21:02","modified_gmt":"2016-06-03T17:21:02","slug":"who-paid-for-this-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=28429","title":{"rendered":"Who Paid For This Study?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/capital-weather-gang\/wp\/2014\/06\/02\/female-named-hurricanes-kill-more-than-male-because-people-dont-respect-them-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post <\/a>posted an article reporting a study that showed <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Female\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Female\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">female<\/a>-named hurricanes kill more people than <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Male\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Male\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">male<\/a>-named hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Female-<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tropical cyclone naming\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tropical_cyclone_naming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">named storms<\/a> have historically killed more because people neither consider them as risky nor take the same precautions, the study published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2014\/05\/29\/1402786111.abstract?sid=79a9dd5a-51c7-4dfe-95b0-25c41fec04e9\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/a> concludes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Researchers at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"University of Illinois at Urbana\u2013Champaign\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.1105388889,-88.2284111111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.1105388889,-88.2284111111 (University%20of%20Illinois%20at%20Urbana%E2%80%93Champaign)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">University of Illinois<\/a> and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Arizona State University\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=33.4211111111,-111.931666667&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=33.4211111111,-111.931666667 (Arizona%20State%20University)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Arizona State University<\/a> examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning \u00a01950 and 2012. \u00a0Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Death\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">deaths<\/a> compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities. \u00a0(The study excluded <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Hurricane Katrina\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Katrina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Katrina<\/a> and Audrey, outlier storms that would skew the model).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have been naming storms after women since 1950 and men since 1979. That means that there were 30 years of female-named storms before there were male-named storms. Of course there would be more female storms with higher death rates&#8211;there were more female storms. I really do wonder about the validity of their research.<\/p>\n<p>The article explains that the study was based on questions to individuals&#8211;not actual storm history:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>To test the hypothesis the gender of the storm names impacts people\u2019s judgments about a storm, the researchers set up 6 experiments presenting a series of questions to between 100 to 346 people. \u00a0The sexism showed up again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Respondents predicted male hurricanes to be more intense the female hurricanes in one exercise. \u00a0In another exercise, the hurricane sex affected how respondents said they would prepare for a hurricane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cPeople imagining a \u2018female\u2019 hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter,\u201d Shavitt said.\u00a0\u201cThe stereotypes that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile toward women \u2013 they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tropical cyclone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tropical_cyclone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Hurricanes<\/a> have been named since 1950. \u00a0Originally, only female names were used; male names were introduced into the mix in 1979.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not a study&#8211;it&#8217;s a survey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday The Washington Post posted an article reporting a study that showed female-named hurricanes kill more people than male-named hurricanes.
