Both Hillary Clinton and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Bernie Sanders\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> have hailed Dodd-Frank as the solution to the problems that caused the 2008 financial meltdown. Unfortunately, if Dodd-Frank is the solution, they have misunderstood the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In their recent debate on <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"MSNBC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">MSNBC<\/a>, both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders bashed <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Wall Street\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.7063888889,-74.0094444444&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.7063888889,-74.0094444444 (Wall%20Street)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Wall Street<\/a> and the banks, blaming them for the financial meltdown and subsequent record-slow economic recovery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sanders, a socialist, called Wall Street and the banks \u201ccriminal\u201d and \u201ccorrupt\u201d and implied that he would jail CEOs at big financial companies for their \u201cillegal activity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>And Clinton issued a literal threat: \u201cYou know, we now have power under the Dodd-Frank legislation to break up the banks.\u201d Doubling down, she said that she now wants the same power over <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Investment banking\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Investment_banking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">investment banks<\/a>, insurance companies, mortgage companies and others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Blaming banks and Wall Street might have populist appeal, but it\u2019s false. In his definitive analysis of the financial crisis, \u201cHidden In Plain Sight,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/scholar\/peter-j-wallison\/\">Peter Wallison<\/a>, who served on the\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Financial_Crisis_Inquiry_Commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission<\/a>, showed that it was the systematic weakening of mortgage lending standards under the U.S. government\u2019s own housing policies that led to the meltdown \u2014 and to the phony call by Democrats to go after Wall Street and the banks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The editorial includes a chart showing the number of regulations that were imposed on banks as a result of Dodd-Frank:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-145636 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/edit3_banks2_021216-300x296.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/edit3_banks2_021216-300x296.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.investors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/EDIT3_banks2_021216-768x757.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.investors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/EDIT3_banks2_021216.jpg 793w\" alt=\"EDIT3_banks2_021216\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The article reports the result of Dodd-Frank:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Banking consultant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanbanker.com\/bankthink\/gop-win-in-november-is-first-step-to-killing-dodd-frank-1079236-1.html?zkPrintable=true\">Eric Grover of Intrepid Ventures<\/a> recently wrote in The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"American Banker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanbanker.com\/aboutus\/?site_id=ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">American Banker<\/a>, \u201cUnder Dodd-Frank, new bank formation has essentially ceased.\u201d The data are shocking: From 2011 to 2014, just one new <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Commercial bank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commercial_bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">commercial bank<\/a> and no new <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Savings bank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Savings_bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">savings banks<\/a> were chartered. In the 15 years before Dodd-Frank, an average of 140 new commercial banks and 15 new savings banks were chartered <em>each year<\/em>. While small banks are going out of business at a record rate due to regulatory costs, big banks with over $50 billion in assets are now \u201ctoo big to fail.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The American economy does better when the government stays out of our business&#8211;not when the government over-regulates things.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, Investor&#8217;s Business Daily posted an editorial about the impact of the Dodd-Frank regulations on the banking industry.
