We send people to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889 (United%20States%20Congress)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Congress<\/a> to represent us. Some do a good job, and some simply forget who elected them. A website called <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulse2016.com\/emmett-mcgroarty\/2015\/12\/21\/duncan-describes-how-republican-leaders-betrayed-their-constituents\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Pulse 2016<\/a> posted an article yesterday about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that just passed Congress. The article includes a number of quotes from <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Arne Duncan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arne_Duncan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Arne Duncan<\/a>, current Education Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the quotes from the article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong> \u201c[I]f you look at the substance of what is there . . . embedded in the law are the values that we\u2019ve promoted and proposed forever. The core of our agenda from Day One, that\u2019s all in there \u2013 early childhood, high standards [<i>i.e., <\/i><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Common Core\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_Core\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Common Core<\/a>], not turning a blind eye when things are bad. For the first time in our nation\u2019s history, that\u2019s the letter of the law.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;We had many, many conversations behind the scenes . . . . And I said for us to support it, they\u2019d have to shed their far, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Far-right politics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Far-right_politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">far right<\/a> [<em>i.e.<\/em>, constituents who support the Constitution and oppose Common Core] . . . . I honestly didn\u2019t know if they\u2019d have the political courage to do that. But they both said they would and they did. I give them tremendous credit for that.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;About a month before [final Senate passage of the bill], I ran into Speaker [Paul] Ryan and we just talked briefly. I asked if he was going to back this, whether he\u2019s willing to take on the far right. I just asked him straight up. And he said, \u201cAbsolutely. We\u2019re going to back this.\u201d And, he did. That\u2019s when I thought it had a real shot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;We were intentionally quiet on the bill \u2013 they asked us specifically not to praise it \u2013 and to let it get through. And so we went into radio silence and then talked about it after the fact. . . . Our goal was to get this bill passed \u2013 intentionally silent on the many, many good aspects of the bill . . . [W]e were very strategically quiet on good stuff . . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;The final thing is we have every ability to implement, to regulate the law . . . it\u2019s just a Washington typical storyline. . . . \u00a0And candidly, our lawyers are much smarter than many of the folks who were working on this bill. There are some face-saving things you give up, some talking points you give up, which we always do because we\u2019re focused on substance. \u00a0And we have every ability to implement. \u00a0That\u2019s all I\u2019ve ever wanted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am reminded of the words of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Benjamin Franklin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Franklin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Ben Franklin<\/a> when leaving the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Constitutional Convention (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_Convention_%28United_States%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Constitutional Convention of 1787<\/a> when asked, \u201cWell, Doctor, what have we got\u2014a Republic or a Monarchy?\u201d Ben Franklin replied, \u201cA Republic, if you can keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unless more Americans begin to pay attention, we will lose it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>America is a Representative Republic.
