{"id":27197,"date":"2015-12-21T20:05:47","date_gmt":"2015-12-22T01:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=27197"},"modified":"2015-12-21T20:05:47","modified_gmt":"2015-12-22T01:05:47","slug":"tax-refund-anyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=27197","title":{"rendered":"Tax Refund, Anyone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/issues\/irs-issued-46-million-erroneous-tax-refunds\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Free Beacon<\/a> posted a story stating that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Internal Revenue Service\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Internal Revenue Service<\/a> issued $46 million in erroneous <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tax refund\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax_refund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">tax refunds<\/a> in 2013 returns.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treasury_Inspector_General_for_Tax_Administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration<\/a> (TIGTA) released an <a href=\"http:\/\/static.politico.com\/5b\/69\/4193f94844ad9e881a9f439db672\/irs-inspector-general-on-release-of-fraudulent-returns.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">audit<\/a> Monday faulting the IRS for approving thousands of potentially <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Fraud\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">fraudulent<\/a> tax refunds in 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cTIGTA identified that because of a programming error, over $27 million of refunds were erroneously issued for 13,043 Tax Year 2013 <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tax return (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax_return_%28United_States%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">tax returns<\/a>,\u201d the audit said. \u201cThe programming error is overriding the IRS\u2019s two-week processing delay on some refund tax returns that are identified by the IRS as potentially fraudulent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The audit said the returns were flagged for claiming a \u201cquestionable <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tax credit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax_credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">tax credit<\/a>\u201d but were then automatically issued before the IRS could complete its verification process.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In addition, the audit identified 3,910 \u201cpotentially fraudulent\u201d tax returns that were issued due to ineffective monitoring, totaling $19 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cThe IRS did not ensure that tax examiners timely completed their verification work,\u201d the audit said. \u201cName mismatches in IRS systems prevented refund holds from posting to tax accounts. Refund holds were either not set correctly or not functioning as intended.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article states that the audit recommended that the IRS improve its screening and verification process.
