I think the idea of new immigrants registering to vote is a wonderful idea if they have some understanding of how American works. In the past, American Presidents have paused immigration in order to allow new immigrants to assimilate. At the present time, we have a very large number of immigrants, some of which are not at all interested in assimilation.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The influence of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Race and ethnicity in the United States Census\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States_Census\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Latino<\/a> voting bloc has added impetus to the drive. According to Latino Decisions, a polling and research firm, 80 percent of naturalized Latino citizens voted for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">President Obama<\/a> in 2012. In <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=43.0,-75.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=43.0,-75.0 (New%20York)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New York State<\/a>, there are approximately 915,000 legal permanent residents, more than 317,400 of whom are Latino, according to the <a title=\"The center\u2019s website.\" href=\"http:\/\/cmsny.org\/\">Center for Migration Studies<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you think that if these immigrants were voting Republican the Democrats would be so anxious to have them here?<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate my point about assimilation:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"288\" data-total-count=\"4660\"><strong>In the end, though, only 38 of the day\u2019s applicants were able to move forward (with the process of becoming an American citizen), Mr. Frugone said. Most of the others were not proficient enough in English to pass the citizenship exam, which requires an applicant to answer basic questions orally, write a sentence and pass a civics test.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"217\" data-total-count=\"4877\"><strong>Some older immigrants who have not learned English wait for the precise moment when they have lived in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">United States<\/a> for 20 years and are older than 50; at that point, they can take the test in their own language.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"251\" data-total-count=\"5128\"><strong>Jose Miguel Toledo Madera, 53, a resident of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Washington Heights, Manhattan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.8416666667,-73.9375&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=40.8416666667,-73.9375 (Washington%20Heights%2C%20Manhattan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Washington Heights<\/a> in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Manhattan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.7283333333,-73.9941666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.7283333333,-73.9941666667 (Manhattan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Manhattan<\/a>, said he had been too busy working as a custodian to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"English language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">learn English<\/a>. After six hours at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"UNITE HERE\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unitehere.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Unite Here<\/a> citizenship drive, he finally finished his application by taking photos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"251\" data-total-count=\"5128\">The article further states:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-para-count=\"251\" data-total-count=\"5128\"><strong>\u201cI want to vote so that we can have a better situation in the country for all the immigrants, for all the people we actually need in this country,\u201d Dinelsa Quezada Martinez, 70, said in Spanish in the organization\u2019s offices. \u201cI want a president that\u2019s really going to worry and take care of our country and all the people in this country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"251\" data-total-count=\"5128\">Note to Ms. Martinez: It is not the President&#8217;s job to take care of the people in this country&#8211;it is the President&#8217;s job not to interfere with the success of the people in this country.
