On August 19th, I posted a story<\/a>\u00a0about one consequence of American<\/a> policy in Afghanistan. The American policy is to ignore the practice of pedophelia that is common among Afghani<\/a> men. The New York Times<\/a> is finally telling the story in an article posted today.<\/p>\n

The article details some of the aspects of the death of Lance Corporal<\/a>\u00a0Gregory Buckley Jr.:<\/p>\n

The father of Lance Corporal Buckley believes the policy of looking away from sexual abuse was a factor in his son\u2019s death, and he has filed a lawsuit to press the Marine Corps<\/a> for more information about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lance Corporal Buckley and two other Marines were killed in 2012 by one of a large entourage of boys living at their base with an Afghan police<\/a> commander named Sarwar Jan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Jan had long had a bad reputation; in 2010, two Marine officers managed to persuade the Afghan authorities to arrest him following a litany of abuses, including corruption, support for the Taliban<\/a> and child abduction. But just two years later, the police commander was back with a different unit, working at Lance Corporal Buckley\u2019s post, Forward Operating Base Delhi<\/a>, in Helmand Province<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lance Corporal Buckley had noticed that a large entourage of \u201ctea boys\u201d \u2014 domestic servants who are sometimes pressed into sexual slavery \u2014 had arrived with Mr. Jan and moved into the same barracks, one floor below the Marines. He told his father about it during his final call home.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The article reports Lance Corporal Buckley’s final call home:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt night we can hear them screaming, but we\u2019re not allowed to do anything about it,\u201d the Marine\u2019s father, Gregory Buckley Sr., recalled his son telling him before he was shot to death at the base in 2012. He urged his son to tell his superiors. \u201cMy son said that his officers told him to look the other way because it\u2019s their culture.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

…When asked about American military policy, the spokesman for the American command in Afghanistan, Col. Brian Tribus, wrote in an email: \u201cGenerally, allegations of child sexual abuse by Afghan military<\/a> or police personnel would be a matter of domestic Afghan criminal law.\u201d He added that \u201cthere would be no express requirement that U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan report it.\u201d An exception, he said, is when rape is being used as a weapon of war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are supporting people in Afghanistan who are as evil as the Taliban. I think it is time to either uphold basic morality and do what we can to change the culture in regard to child sexual abuse or get out. I really don’t see how anyone with a conscience can look the other way when this behavior is going on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
