On Sunday The New York Post<\/a> posted an article about a course being taught in some American colleges about the events of September 11, 2001<\/a>. It is not a surprise that many of our college professors are politically left of center, but sometimes they simply cross a line that should not be crossed. The article reports:<\/p>\n

Case in point is a freshman-level English<\/a> class taught at several major universities across the country called \u201cThe Literature of 9\/11\u201d \u2014 which focuses almost entirely on writings from the perspective of the Islamic terrorists<\/a>, rather than the nearly 3,000 Americans who were slaughtered by them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The syllabus, which includes books like \u201cThe Reluctant Fundamentalist<\/a>\u201d and \u201cPoems from Guantanamo: Detainees Speak,\u201d portray terrorists as \u201cfreedom fighters\u201d driven by oppressive US<\/a> foreign policies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…In Ahuja\u2019s (UNC associate English professor Neel Ahuja at UNC Chapel Hill<\/a>) twisted worldview, al Qaeda<\/a> terrorists are the real victims. \u201cAbu Zubaydah<\/a>\u2019s torture may be interpreted as simply one more example of the necropower of US imperialism, the power to coerce and kill targeted populations,\u201d Ahuja recently wrote in an academic paper criticizing the war on terror.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He says America\u2019s depiction of the 9\/11 terrorists as \u201cmonsters\u201d is merely an attempt to \u201canimalize\u201d them as insects and justify \u201csquashing\u201d them in \u201ca fantasy of justice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This colonialist \u201cconstruct\u201d of an \u201canimalized enemy,\u201d he added, \u201cdovetails with the work of mourning the nation after 9\/11 (which in the logic of security must be made perpetual, melancholic).\u201d To him, it\u2019s all cynically designed to justify more \u201cimperial violence\u201d against \u201cMuslim, Arab and South Asian men.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, men who slit a flight attendant’s throat and killed innocent civilians are not monsters? I remember that day, and I remember sitting with a friend whose daughter was in the second tower waiting for word about her daughter. The word eventually came that her daughter had been killed, and DNA evidence<\/a> found in a stairwell gave her family some closure.<\/p>\n

Parents who are paying tuition at the colleges where this course is taught should demand that the course be taken out of the curriculum. This is an insult to the families of the people who were killed on that day, and it insults the intelligence of Americans who remember the events of that day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
