I don&#8217;t mean a death in the family&#8211;I mean your own death. Well, not in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.6641666667,-73.9386111111&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.6641666667,-73.9386111111 (New%20York%20City)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New York City<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/08\/07\/city-tried-to-fire-man-for-missing-work-because-he-was-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Post<\/a> reported that that\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Medicaid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Medicaid<\/a>-eligibility specialist Geoffrey Toliver was fired after not showing up for his hearing where he was to be accused of going <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Desertion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desertion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">AWOL<\/a> because he had not shown up for his job since November 2013.\u00a0Toliver died at age 65 on Dec. 8, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cHow do you fire a man who is already <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Death\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">dead<\/a>? He deserves better. The agency itself should have known,\u201d said Ted Willbright, who added that he considered Toliver as a brother.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cSome people he worked with were very supportive, so how did HRA the organization not know? He\u2019s dead, and they\u2019re saying he abandoned his job. He didn\u2019t abandon his job, his job abandoned him. He was a good man. Truly, truly a good man.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>HRA officials said they sought to remove Toliver from his $38,000-a-year job after they couldn\u2019t reach him for well over a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>They marked the start of his absence as Nov. 12, 2013, and said calls and certified letters mailed to his home were never answered.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe did everything we could to contact him and his family,\u201d said HRA spokesman David Neustadt. \u201cThis employee was not paid when he wasn\u2019t working, but we left his job open in case he recovered.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>He said that now that the agency knows of his \u201cunfortunate death,\u201d it would take no further action.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What would be\u00a0the appropriate further action to take against a dead man?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is death an excuse for missing work?
