The\u00a0<\/span>EPA<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>estimates over 1 million\u00a0<\/span>gallons<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>mining waste<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>was dumped into the river.\u00a0This sounds like an obvious example of a careless big corporation only interested in profits–only it isn’t.<\/span><\/p>\n

The wastewater released contains<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>heavy metals<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum, Ostrander said. The EPA is preparing a plan to sample private<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>water wells<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>along the Animas River valley to test for contamination, including<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>mercury contamination<\/span><\/a>, he said. . .<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

By Friday morning, the plume of orange had made its way downstream and was eight miles from the northern border of<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>New Mexico<\/span><\/a>, the EPA said in an emailed statement.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
