Bloomberg.com<\/a> reported on Wednesday on a new phenomena in the Middle East<\/a> and some North African<\/a> countries. It seems that the countries that criticized Israel for building security fences are now building their own security fences.<\/p>\n

Terrorism is a world-wide threat. Fences will not end terrorism, nor will it keep out all terrorists, but it will deter a few. We need to deter as many as possible, and fences are one weapon in the fight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Middle East and North Africa<\/a> is now the most walled region in the world,\u201d said Said Saddiki<\/a>, a professor of International Relations<\/a> and International Law at Al-Ain University of Science and Technology<\/a> in Abu Dhabi<\/a>. They range from \u201cfences inside cities to anti-migrant walls and separation barriers to counter-insurgency\u201d barricades, he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The builders have often been spurred by fear of Islamic State, after its conquests in Iraq<\/a> and Syria<\/a> and the group\u2019s ability to inspire Muslim extremists<\/a> elsewhere, or concern over failed or failing nations next door. The jihadist group has built its own walls to fend off attackers and keep people from escaping, including around the Iraqi cities of Tal Afar<\/a> and Mosul. Syria\u2019s embattled government has placed concrete shields around areas of regime support in Homs.<\/strong><\/p>\n
