The Daily Signal<\/a> posted an article yesterday about legislation<\/a> introduced by freshman Congresswomen Gwen Graham, D-Florida<\/a>. The bill is called Travel Perks Elimination Act.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

\u201cNine months<\/a> ago, I pledged I would work to end wasteful Congressional<\/a> perks. Today, I\u2019m following through on that promise,\u201d Graham said. \u201cIt\u2019s a common sense idea that Republicans and Democrats<\/a> can both agree on: members of Congress shouldn\u2019t be able to charge taxpayers for first-class airfare or long-term personal car leases.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to her statement, the legislation would also ban the use of taxpayer<\/a> funds for personal car leases, some of which are \u201cas high as $825 a month.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is very obvious that she is new to Congress. It is also very obvious that she has the right idea.<\/p>\n

The article further reports:<\/p>\n

Rep. Rod Blum, R-Iowa<\/a>, is the cosponsor of the bill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a partisan issue,\u201d Blum said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cMembers of Congress don\u2019t need taxpayer funded perks like first class travel<\/a> and long term car leases to do their job. America<\/a>\u2019s founders never intended for public servants to live a life of luxury paid for by everyday Americans. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve made it a high priority to back legislation which reforms Congress and ensures good stewardship of U.S. taxpayer dollars.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romina Boccia, the Grover M. Hermann fellow in federal budgetary affairs at The Heritage Foundation<\/a>, supports the measure as an appropriate way to reduce government waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n
