It was posted today.<\/p>\n<address style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Africa Command\" href=\"http:\/\/www.africom.mil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">U.S. Africa Command<\/a> records \u2013 heavily blacked out \u2013 show military gathered forces to support \u201canti-terrorist\u201d actions in Benghazi day after attack<\/strong><\/address>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>(<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8951111111,-77.0366666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=38.8951111111,-77.0366666667 (Washington%2C%20D.C.)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Washington, DC<\/a>) \u2013 Judicial Watch announced today that the Obama administration finally turned over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/pentagon-benghazi-attack-docs\/\">hundreds of pages of documents<\/a> about the military response to the September 11, 2012, terrorist attack on the U.S. Special Mission Compound and other facilities in Benghazi.\u00a0 The documents, which are heavily blacked out (redacted), confirm that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Armed Forces\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Armed_Forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">U.S. Military<\/a>, through its U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) drafted orders for a military response to the attack, specifically \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-email-115\/\">to protect vital naval and national assets<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Other documents suggest that the military, hours after the attack, tied the assault to a group supporting \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-email-249\/\">an Islamic state<\/a>\u201d that wanted to attack U.S. interests in Libya in retaliation for a drone strike on an al-Qaeda leader.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Pentagon produced a total of 486 pages in response to a federal court order in a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Freedom of Information Act (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freedom_of_Information_Act_%28United_States%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)<\/a> lawsuit Judicial Watch filed against the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of Defense\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8709888889,-77.0559611111 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20Defense)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">U.S. Department of Defense<\/a> asking for \u201cany and all\u201d records produced by the U.S. Africa Command Operations<\/strong> <strong>Center concerning the terrorist attack on U.S. facilities in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Benghazi\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.1166666667,20.0666666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=32.1166666667,20.0666666667 (Benghazi)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Benghazi, Libya<\/a>. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia on September 4, 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/09-09-14-jw-v-dod-01508-africa-ops-benghazi\/\">(<em>Judicial Watch v. Department of Defense<\/em> (No. 1:14-cv-01508))<\/a>.\u00a0 Almost all of the documents had been previously classified as secret, and the Defense Department has redacted a large percentage of the material in order to protect \u201cmilitary plans and operations,\u201d \u201cintelligence\u201d activities, and other exemptions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Included in the production was a September 13, 2012, draft cable, \u201cUS Africa Command Request for Forces,\u201d which sought an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-email-114-120\/\">immediate<\/a>\u201d response from the Joint Chiefs of Staff for \u201cadditional forces\u201d for the mission to \u201cprovide limited duration military and expeditionary antiterrorism and security forces in support of USAFRICOM commander in order to protect vital naval and national assets.\u201d\u00a0 The planning document was approved by \u201cVADM [Charles] Joseph Leidig, Deputy CDR, Africa Command.\u201d\u00a0 The name of the military\u2019s Benghazi operation was Jukebox Lotus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Obama administration blacked out the specific mission information in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-email-127-142\/\">final deployment orders<\/a> for Operation Jukebox Lotus.\u00a0 The orders (EXORD) detail that, ultimately, several components of the military, including Special Operations Forces, were deployed to support limited security and evacuation operations in Libya, including support for \u201cBPT\u201d (Be Prepared To) included, from the U.S. Army in Africa, \u201cBPT support with mortuary affairs.\u201d\u00a0 The Pentagon has previously released other orders with virtually no redactions, including an <a class=\"extl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dod.mil\/pubs\/foi\/joint_staff\/jointStaff_jointOperations\/11_F_1258_doc_2_Liby_Contingency_Opertations_Exord_0002_Emergency_Assistance_Transportation.pdf\">operation in Libya in 2004<\/a> and an Obama administration <a class=\"extl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/man\/eprint\/exord-libya.pdf\">operation<\/a> to attack Muammar Gaddafi\u2019s government forces in Libya in 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Other documents show that, early on September 12, 2012, the day after the attack, top Pentagon leadership received <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-email-249\/\">intelligence briefing slides<\/a>\u00a0reporting that a June 6, 2012, attack on the Benghazi Special Mission Compound was tied to a group promoting an Islamic state in Libya, \u201ccame in response to the 5 June [2012] <a class=\"extl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/06\/05\/world\/asia\/pakistan-drone-libi\/index.html?hpt=hp_t1\">drone strike<\/a> on al-Qaida senior leader <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Abu Yahya al-Libi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abu_Yahya_al-Libi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Abu-Yahya al-libi<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/benghazi-africom-274-276\/\">documents also confirm<\/a> that the military used a photo from a Twitter post to try to ascertain the status of Ambassador Stevens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Obama administration produced no documents showing communications from the State Department to AFRICOM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The records do show that U.S. military officials were keenly aware of the terrorist threat in the region. \u201cThe DIA [Defense Intelligence Agency] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Benghazi-AFRICOM-Email-130.pdf\">terrorism threat level<\/a> for Libya is significant,\u201d one email message says. \u201cThe DOS [Department of State] residential criminal threat level for Libya is high and the non-residential criminal threat level is high. The political violence threat level for Libya is critical.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Judicial Watch dismissed its lawsuit on February 12, 2015, after it succeeded in finally obtaining these AFRICOM Benghazi documents.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/document-archive\/africom-vaughn\/\"><em>Vaughn<\/em> index<\/a>, which describes why the documents have been withheld, is also publicly available for congressional and other investigations into the scandal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Islamic militants attacked the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi on the evening of September 11, 2012.\u00a0 U.S. Ambassador <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"J. Christopher Stevens\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._Christopher_Stevens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">J. Christopher Stevens<\/a> and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith were both killed. Just a few hours later, a second terrorist strike targeted a different compound about one mile away. Two CIA contractors, Tyrone Woods and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"2012 Benghazi attack\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.0613333333,20.0809166667&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=32.0613333333,20.0809166667 (2012%20Benghazi%20attack)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Glen Doherty<\/a>, were killed and 10 others were injured in the second attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cIt is extraordinary that we had to wait for over two years and had to force the release of documents that provide the first glimpse into the military response to the terrorist attack in Benghazi,\u201d said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. \u201cThere is no doubt that the military considered this to be terrorist attack tied to a group allied with al Qaeda. Why does the Obama administration continue to black out history in these military documents?\u00a0 If there were no embarrassing facts, there would be nothing to hide.\u00a0 This lack of transparency is an insult to those in the military and other deployed U.S. government personnel whose morale has been decimated by the breach of trust caused by President Obama\u2019s Benghazi lies and failures.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following information is taken directly from the Judicial Watch website.
