{"id":2495,"date":"2010-12-10T21:13:20","date_gmt":"2010-12-10T21:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2495"},"modified":"2010-12-10T21:13:20","modified_gmt":"2010-12-10T21:13:20","slug":"ts_very_easy_for_big_brother_a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2495","title":{"rendered":"t&#8217;s Very Easy For Big Brother (And Pretty Much Anyone Else Who Knows Their Way Around A Computer) To Be Watching You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article is based on an old newspaper article, but it caught my eye when Michael Yon put up a related story on Facebook.&nbsp; On August 11 of this year the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/12\/technology\/personaltech\/12basics.html?_r=1\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;posted an article about something called a geotag.&nbsp; A geotag is a bit of data embedded in a photograph that provides the longitude and latitude of where a photo is taken.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Security experts and privacy advocates have recently begun warning about the potential dangers of geotags, which are embedded in photos and videos taken with GPS-equipped smartphones and <\/em><a title=\"Why few cameras have GPS ability.\" href=\"http:\/\/gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/28\/why-dont-more-cameras-offer-gps\/\"><font color=\"#004276\"><em>digital cameras<\/em><\/font><\/a><em>. Because the location data is not visible to the casual viewer, the concern is that many people may not realize it is there; and they could be compromising their privacy, if not their safety, when they post geotagged media online.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is particularly significant to members of our armed forces serving overseas who may post pictures online for their families at home.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The article also points out how posting pictures on social networks showing expensive cars or possessions can put you at risk for theft:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Moreover, since multimedia sites like Twitter and YouTube have user-friendly application programming interfaces, or A.P.I.&#8217;s, someone with a little knowledge about writing computer code can create a program to search for geotagged photos in a systematic way. For example, they can search for those accompanied with text like &#8220;on vacation&#8221; or those taken in a specified neighborhood. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;&#8221;Any 16 year-old with basic programming skills can do this,&#8221; said Gerald Friedland, a researcher at the International Computer Science Institute at the <\/em><a class=\"meta-org\" title=\"More articles about the University of California.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/topics\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/u\/university_of_california\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"><font color=\"#004276\"><em>University of California, Berkeley<\/em><\/font><\/a><em>.
