Yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2014\/12\/29\/michigan-has-more-food-stamp-recipients-than-students\/\" target=\"_blank\">Breitbart.com<\/a> posted a story showing how much the food stamps program is impacting the state.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Michigan, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2014\/12\/26\/michigan-to-begin-drug-testing-some-welfare-recipients\/\">announced <\/a>on Friday plans to begin drug testing some welfare recipients, currently has 1,679,421 individuals on food stamps (known officially as the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supplemental_Nutrition_Assistance_Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a>, or SNAP), according to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pd\/15SNAPpartPP.pdf\"> U.S. Agriculture Department<\/a>. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/mde\/MDE_Fast_Fact_379573_7.pdf\">Michigan Department of Education<\/a>, the state\u2019s total pupil count for K-12 is 1,564,114.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Michigan\u2019s food stamp program has struggled to combat fraud and abuse. As recently as last week, for example, three brothers pleaded guilty for their roles in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2014\/12\/27\/middle-eastern-market-food-stamp-scam-cost-taxpayers-1278700\/\">food stamp fraud scheme<\/a> at the Middle Eastern Market in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that cost taxpayers $1,278,700.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>This year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pd\/17SNAPfyBEN$.pdf\">Michigan\u2019s food stamp program<\/a> cost taxpayers $2,576,165,148.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is becoming very obvious that one way to stop runaway spending on both the federal and state level is to combat welfare fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michigan is taking steps to reform its welfare program&#8211;on Friday the state announced its plan to drug test welfare recipients.
