Ms. Genovese was taking pictures of a decorative helicopter in front of the Gabreski Airport <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Air National Guard\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ang.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Air National Guard<\/a> base in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Westhampton Beach, New York\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.8088888889,-72.6461111111&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.8088888889,-72.6461111111 (Westhampton%20Beach%2C%20New%20York)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Westhampton Beach<\/a> for a \u201c<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Support our troops\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Support_our_troops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Support Our Troops<\/a>\u201d website.<\/p>\n<p>When her car was searched, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Southampton\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=50.89696,-1.40416&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=50.89696,-1.40416 (Southampton)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Southhampton<\/a> police found a legally owned rifle she was taking home from a nearby <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Shooting range\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shooting_range\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">shooting range<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports what happened next:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>She contends a deputy sheriff arrived on the scene later and said to her, \u201cI bet you are one of those Tea Party people.\u201d When Genovese said she\u2019s gone to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Tea Party protests\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tea_Party_protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Tea Party rallies<\/a>, he allegedly said, \u201cYou\u2019re a real right-winger, aren\u2019t you?\u201d and \u201cYou are a \u2018Teabagger\u2019\u201d and then added that she\u2019d be arrested for terrorism to make an example of other \u201c<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Right-wing politics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Right-wing_politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">right wingers<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cMs. Genovese was subjected to a level of abuse because [authorities] did not share the same political views as she did and saw this as an excuse to deny her even the most basic civil rights,\u201d her lawyer Frederick Brewington said.\u200b\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Genovese said in a statement said she was \u201crelieved\u201d by the jury\u2019s verdict. She added, \u201cif this can happen to me, and officers can abuse their power like this, I can only imagine how other people who are not as fortunate as me have been treated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ms. Genovese has been awarded \u200b$1.12 million\u200b by a federal jury over her false prosecution by Suffolk County authorities.
