I understand that the new Senate will not take office until January, but why in the world are the Republicans surrendering in advance?<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The proposal: Pass an omnibus spending resolution that funds most of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Federal government of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_government_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">federal government<\/a> into October of next year, while passing a separate resolution to fund the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Department of Homeland Security\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.9380555556,-77.0822222222&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.9380555556,-77.0822222222 (United%20States%20Department%20of%20Homeland%20Security)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Department of Homeland Security<\/a> just through the end of February. The coalition of Republicans and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Democratic Party (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.democrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Democrats<\/a> supporting the \u201ccromnibus\u201d bill, cobbled together by Republican leadership with hundreds of riders to please both parties, might have been impressive if it weren\u2019t for the fact that it now may be collapsing. (There may be a few days\u2019 funding extension to make time for voting on the overall proposal.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8897222222,-77.0088888889 (United%20States%20Congress)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Congress<\/a> shouldn\u2019t let the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Government shutdown\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">government shut down<\/a>, but Republicans should neither acquiesce to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">President Obama\u2019s<\/a> unprecedented executive power grab nor give up control over the budget for well into the 114th Congress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get back to a budget! The Senate has not passed a budget since 2009. Why? Because the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Continuing resolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continuing_resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">continuing resolutions<\/a> passed allow the government to continue spending at the current level. This is insanity and allows no one to be held accountable. It is time for this practice to end. That is one of many reasons Republicans were elected&#8211;to stop runaway government and runaway debt.<\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Republican members ought to vote against the cromnibus, and many of them surely will. If Democrats defect over their displeasure with some other elements of the bill, the measure could fail. The alternative then may be a short-term funding bill into the next year, which would be better than the current plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In any case, it\u2019s important that the nascent GOP majority\u2019s first act not be surrender.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Republicans won for a reason.
