{"id":24517,"date":"2014-12-08T13:27:27","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T18:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=24517"},"modified":"2014-12-08T13:27:27","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T18:27:27","slug":"common-sense-is-obviously-becoming-more-rare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=24517","title":{"rendered":"Common Sense Is Obviously Becoming More Rare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/world\/eu-court-orders-france-to-pay-thousands-to-somali-pirates\/ar-BBgkWk2?pfr=1\" target=\"_blank\"> MSN News<\/a> reported that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"European Union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">European Union<\/a> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Human rights\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">human rights<\/a> court has ordered <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"France\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=48.8566666667,2.35083333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=48.8566666667,2.35083333333 (France)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">France<\/a> to pay thousands of euros to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Piracy in Somalia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piracy_in_Somalia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Somali pirates<\/a> for violating their rights.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Somali <a href=\"http:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/piracy-maritime\/\" target=\"_blank\">pirates<\/a> were apprehended on the high seas by the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"French Army\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/sites\/terre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">French army<\/a> on two separate occasions in 2008 and taken back to France for trial.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.echr.coe.int\/Pages\/home.aspx?p=home\" target=\"_blank\">European Court of Human Rights<\/a> (<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"European Convention on Human Rights\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Convention_on_Human_Rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">ECHR<\/a>) said that French authorities should have brought the pirates before a judge &#8220;without delay&#8221; when they arrived on French territory after being held at sea. The EU\u2019s top human rights court said French authorities were wrong to keep the pirates in custody for an additional 48 hours before bringing them before a judge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Nothing justifies such an additional delay,&#8221; the court said in its verdict, adding that it constituted a &#8220;violation of their rights to freedom and security&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>France was ordered to pay between \u20ac5,000 and \u20ac2,000 ($6,100 and $2,500) to each pirate for &#8220;moral damages&#8221;, plus amounts varying from \u20ac3,000 to \u20ac9,000 ($3,700 and $11,200) to cover <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Costs (English law)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Costs_%28English_law%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">legal costs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are pirates. They earn a living by attacking ships, stealing and kidnapping and killing innocent people. They gave up their rights to freedom and security when they chose <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Piracy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">piracy<\/a> as a profession.
