Thanks, but no thanks.<\/p>\n<p>The article states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Starting in January, Republicans will hold state legislative majorities and the governor\u2019s mansions in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.34,-85.58&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=44.34,-85.58 (Michigan)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Michigan<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.1219998333,-80.6839998333&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=41.1219998333,-80.6839998333 (Ohio)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Ohio<\/a>, Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa, and Nevada. If some or all of those states passed laws allocating their electoral votes by districts, all of these purple-to-<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Red states and blue states\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_states_and_blue_states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">blue states<\/a> would allocate their electoral votes in a way that would make it extremely likely for Republicans to win at least half of them. And without half the electoral votes in those states, it would nearly impossible for the Democratic nominee to win.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>For example, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Barack Obama<\/a> won Ohio twice, and because he won the popular vote in 2012, won all of the state\u2019s 18 electoral votes. Under the district system, if the Republican presidential nominee wins all of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States House of Representatives\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8888888889,-77.0088888889&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.8888888889,-77.0088888889 (United%20States%20House%20of%20Representatives)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">U.S. House<\/a> districts in Ohio currently held by the GOP, he would get twelve electoral votes and the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Democratic Party (United States)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.democrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Democrat<\/a> would get only six.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;Any state\u2019s change to this more proportional system would be entirely constitutional. When Barack Obama won one of Nebraska\u2019s electoral votes in 2008, no one on the Democratic side complained.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although I can understand the logic of this, I think it is a really bad idea to tinker with the Electoral College. For example, without the Electoral College, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Rhode Island\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.7,-71.5&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=41.7,-71.5 (Rhode%20Island)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Rhode Island<\/a>, Montana, Wyoming, and several other states would never see a Presidential candidate. They would have essentially no voice in national elections. If we begin tinkering with the Electoral College, I suspect it will be the first step on the road to abolishing it.
