{"id":24164,"date":"2014-10-26T15:52:56","date_gmt":"2014-10-26T19:52:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=24164"},"modified":"2014-10-26T15:52:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-26T19:52:56","slug":"its-a-little-late-to-discover-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=24164","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s A Little Late To Discover This"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sun Journal in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"New Bern, North Carolina\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.1091666667,-77.0691666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=35.1091666667,-77.0691666667 (New%20Bern%2C%20North%20Carolina)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">New Bern, North Carolina<\/a>,(no link&#8211;current article available only to subscribers) posted an article today about a state audit of voters in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"North Carolina\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.5,-80.0&amp;spn=3.0,3.0&amp;q=35.5,-80.0 (North%20Carolina)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">North Carolina<\/a> that indicates<span class=\"InfoComponentTextChunk\"><span class=\"InfoComponentTextContent\"><span class=\"InfoComponentTextPrimitive\"><span class=\"InfoComponentTextPara\"> that hundreds of people on North Carolina voter rolls aren\u2019t U.S. citizens \u2014 and are ineligible to vote. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The article states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The State Board of Elections said in a news release late Friday that it found 1,425 registered voters who are likely non-citizens in an analysis of data from the state <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Department of Motor Vehicles\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_of_Motor_Vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Division of Motor Vehicles<\/a> and the federal Department of Homeland Security. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The announcement comes less than two weeks before an Election Day that features the close race between Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan and her Republican challenger <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Thom Tillis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thom_Tillis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Thom Tillis<\/a>. The contest will help determine which party controls the Senate. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe are working to ensure that no ballot cast by a noncitizen will count in this or any future election,\u201d Kim Westbrook, the board\u2019s executive director, said in a statement. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The board is preparing instructions for local elections officials to challenge ballots under a process that would give the voters a chance to prove their citizenship. The board says it\u2019s a crime for a noncitizen to register or vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article further reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>On Friday, a coalition of voting rights groups expressed concern about the audit in a letter to state elections officials. It cited laws regarding maintenance of voting rolls and urged caution when comparing voter rolls to data from the DMV and federal immigration officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0The letter was signed by Project Vote, Demos, Fair Elections Legal Network, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"American Civil Liberties Union\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials\" href=\"http:\/\/naleo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">NALEO Educational Fund<\/a>, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, and Action NC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u00a0\u201cOur organizations are deeply concerned about maintaining access to the polls for all of North Carolina\u2019s voters in keeping with the requirements of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Voter Registration Act of 1993\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Voter_Registration_Act_of_1993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">NVRA<\/a>,\u201d the letter said, referring to the National <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Voter registration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voter_registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Voter Registration<\/a> Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are requirements in the NVRA that voter lists be periodically audited and purged of people who have died, moved out of an area, or for some reason are ineligible to vote. Unfortunately, the Department of Justice under Eric Holder chose not to enforce these laws.<\/p>\n<p>Judicial Watch is an organization that has worked tirelessly in recent years to ensure the integrity of the vote in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">America<\/a>. Their latest victory has been in Indiana, where 700,000 voters were moved to &#8220;inactive status&#8221; as a result of a May 2014 statewide mailing to all registered voters. This mailing was the result of efforts by Judicial Watch and True the Vote. They had been advocating in court for two years to get this mailing to take place. Statistically, nearly 1 in 5 Indiana voter registrations are for people who have moved and no longer live at the address associated with that voter&#8217;s outdated registration.
