The Daily Caller<\/a> posted an article today about a letter written by FEC<\/a> Vice Chair Ann Ravel<\/a> about her plans to deal with the issue of internet political advertising<\/a>. The concern is that her plans will severely limit political speech of any kind on the internet.<\/p>\n

The internet has made a significant difference in the political climate in America<\/a>. People who do not trust the mainstream media have a place they can go to investigate news stories on their own. Since many of the internet news<\/a> sites lean conservative, there are those in the Democrat party<\/a> who consider this a threat. The significance of the internet in the political dialogue in America is almost on the level of the significance that talk radio has been in recent years.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

The Republican<\/a> members of the commission cited a 2006 ruling which provided a so-called \u201cInternet<\/a> exemption\u201d which allows for the publication of free political web videos.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But according to her letter, Ravel, an Obama appointee, hopes to change that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA re-examination of the Commission<\/a>\u2019s approach to the Internet and other emerging technologies is long overdue,\u201d she wrote, adding that \u201cthe Commission has not adapted with\u201d a changing world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Warning against \u201cturning a blind eye to the Internet\u2019s growing force in the political arena,\u201d Ravel said that \u201cthis effort to protect individual bloggers and online commentators\u201d has been \u201cstretched to cover slickly-produced ads solely on the Internet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fact that FEC Vice Chair Ann Ravel has written this letter tells us that the Democrats are concerned about the growth of the new media.
