The have combined to form the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and have raised the price of oil from somewhere near $5 a barrel to over $100 a barrel (although the cost of oil is currently dropping).<\/p>\n<p>T<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/opec-members-rift-deepens-amid-falling-oil-prices-1413136848\" target=\"_blank\">he Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported today that as the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Western world\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Western countries<\/a> begin to develop their oil resources, OPEC members are fighting over production quotas and prices.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>But even modest cooperation between many members has broken down, and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Saudi Arabia\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=24.65,46.7666666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=24.65,46.7666666667 (Saudi%20Arabia)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, in particular, has moved to act on its own. While it cut output earlier this summer, other members didn\u2019t go along. Since then, it has dropped its prices.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Each member has a different<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/oil-price-slump-strains-budgets-of-some-opec-members-1412952367\" target=\"_new\"> tolerance for lower prices<\/a>. Kuwait, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United Arab Emirates\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=24.4666666667,54.3666666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=24.4666666667,54.3666666667 (United%20Arab%20Emirates)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">the United Arab Emirates<\/a> and Saudi Arabia generally don\u2019t need prices quite as high as Iran and Venezuela to keep their budgets in the black.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Late Friday, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Venezuela\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=10.5,-66.9666666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=10.5,-66.9666666667 (Venezuela)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Venezuelan<\/a> Foreign Minister <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Rafael Ram\u00edrez (Venezuela)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rafael_Ram%C3%ADrez_%28Venezuela%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Rafael Ramirez<\/a>, who represents Caracas in the group, <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/venezuela-seeks-emergency-opec-meeting-1413056395\" target=\"_new\">called for an urgent meeting <\/a>to tackle falling prices. The group\u2019s next regular meeting is set for late next month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>But on Sunday, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ali Al-Omair\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ali_Al-Omair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Ali al-Omair<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Kuwait\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=29.3666666667,47.9666666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=29.3666666667,47.9666666667 (Kuwait)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Kuwait\u2019s<\/a> oil minister, said there had been <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/opec-unlikely-to-cut-production-says-kuwaiti-minister-1413127322\" target=\"_new\">no invitation for such a meeting<\/a>, suggesting the group would need to stomach lower prices. He said there was a natural floor to how low prices could fall\u0097at about $76 to $77 per barrel\u2014near wh<\/strong>at<strong> he said was the average production costs per barrel in Russia and the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The history of oil prices has often been that when the Middle East begins to drop their prices, Americans stop looking for cheaper oil in their own country. Considering the current instability in the Middle East in the OPEC nations, that would be a big mistake.<\/p>\n<p>America needs to be energy independent for both economic and security reasons.
