The problem with attempting to rewrite recent history is that there are too many people around who remember what actually happened and that some of them write books. Such is the case with the political spin<\/a> President Obama<\/a> has used to explain why there were no troops left behind in Iraq.<\/p>\n

Paul Mirengoff at Power Line<\/a> posted an article yesterday about Leon Panetta<\/a>‘s new book \u201cWorthy Fights,\u201d excerpted in Time Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

In Panetta\u2019s forthcoming memoir \u201cWorthy Fights,\u201d which Time Magazine<\/a> has excerpted, Panetta argues that Iraqi<\/a> leaders privately wanted U.S. forces<\/a> to stay behind after the formal 2011 withdrawal; that the U.S. had \u201cleverage\u201d to strike a deal; and that the Defense and State departments attempted to do so. However, says Panetta, \u201cthe President\u2019s team at the White House<\/a> pushed back\u201d and thus no deal was reached.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This statement agrees with statements made by Ryan Crocker<\/a>, ambassador to Iraq during the period in question.<\/p>\n
