{"id":2350,"date":"2010-10-21T08:19:51","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T08:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2350"},"modified":"2010-10-21T08:19:51","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T08:19:51","slug":"is_barney_frank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=2350","title":{"rendered":"Is Barney Frank ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not really.&nbsp; Yesterday Jeff Jacoby posted an article at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/editorial_opinion\/oped\/articles\/2010\/10\/20\/fannie_freddie_frank_and_fiction\/\">Boston Globe<\/a>&nbsp;about recent statements made by Congressman Barney Frank about his role in the mortgage lending crisis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p sizset=\"61\" sizcache=\"2\"><em>&#8220;Frank faces a spirited challenge from <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/seanbielat.org\/\"><em>Republican Sean Bielat<\/em><\/a><em>, a 35-year-old businessman and Marine Corps reservist. Bielat has turned Frank&#8217;s longtime support for <org idsrc=\"NYSE\" value=\"FNM\">Fannie Mae<\/org> and <org idsrc=\"NYSE\" value=\"FRE\">Freddie Mac<\/org>, the &#8220;government sponsored entities&#8221; that aggressively enabled the subprime mortgage lending at the heart of the financial meltdown, into the major issue of the race. <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/massachusetts-election-2010.com\/5645\/barney-frank-and-sean-bielat-debate-on-necns-broadside\/\"><em>During a debate last week<\/em><\/a><em>, Bielat charged: &#8220;By pushing for homeownership, even among those who couldn&#8217;t afford the homes, Barney Frank put this country on a perilous footing.&#8221;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" sizset=\"61\" sizcache=\"2\">The YouTube video &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1RZVw3no2A4&amp;annotation_id=annotation_151155&amp;feature=iv\">Burning Down The House<\/a>&#8221; is a video tour of&nbsp;Congressional statements regarding lending, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and regulation of the mortgage market.&nbsp; It shows the roots and growth of the problem with statements by the Congressmen involved.&nbsp; I strongly recommend watching it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" sizset=\"61\" sizcache=\"2\">The Democrat talking point about the mortgage crisis is that it was caused by &#8220;Wall Street Greed.&#8221;&nbsp; Wall Street greed may&nbsp;have played a small part in it, but logically, the problem began when banks were forced to lend money to people who could not afford their mortgages.&nbsp; Had gas prices remained stable (domestic drilling allowed?), many homeowners could probably have squeaked by, but when gasoline prices neared $4 at the end of 2008, family budgets&nbsp;could no longer deal with the increase.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" sizset=\"61\" sizcache=\"2\">Mr. Jacoby reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p sizset=\"71\" sizcache=\"2\"><em>&#8220;As far back as 1991, the Globe reported that Frank lobbied Fannie Mae to ease its rules restricting mortgages on two- and three-family homes, even though the default rate on those mortgages was far higher than the rate for single-family dwellings. Was that being a &#8220;consistent critic&#8221; of low-income home ownership?
