The terrorists emerged from a tunnel, ready to attack, realized they had been spotted, and attempted to go back into the tunnel. In June 2006 two Israeli soldiers were killed in an ambush that began via a tunnel in the same region, and a third, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Gilad Shalit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilad_Shalit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Gilad Shalit<\/a>, was captured and taken back to <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Gaza\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=31.5166666667,34.45&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=31.5166666667,34.45 (Gaza)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Gaza<\/a>. His exchange, five and a half years later, for 1,027 <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Palestinian prisoners in Israel\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palestinian_prisoners_in_Israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Palestinian prisoners<\/a>, is considered one of Hamas\u2019s crowning achievements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>In the years since that assault several complex tunnels have been discovered, including, most recently, one that was found and bombed on the eve of Operation Protective Edge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Lerner said he did not believe the attack was a significant shift in the tide of the 10-day-old campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the time that <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mohamed Morsi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohamed_Morsi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Mohamed Morsi<\/a> was <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"President of Egypt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_Egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">President of Egypt<\/a>, terrorists had pretty much free rein in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sinai Peninsula\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=29.5,33.8333333333&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=29.5,33.8333333333 (Sinai%20Peninsula)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Sinai Peninsula<\/a>. I suspect that many of these tunnels were dug during that time.
