People are being killed because they belong to the wrong <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Islamic schools and branches\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_schools_and_branches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Muslim sect<\/a> or because they tried to preserve the country. It is awful. But in the awfulness, let&#8217;s not forget how we got here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraq_Resolution\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a> (not a site I love, but occasionally useful) posts some of the items in the resolution that led us to war:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Iraq&#8217;s noncompliance with the conditions of the <a title=\"United Nations Security Council Resolution 687\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Security_Council_Resolution_687\">1991 ceasefire agreement<\/a>, including interference with <a title=\"United Nations Special Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Special_Commission\">U.N. weapons inspectors<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq &#8220;continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability&#8221; and &#8220;actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability&#8221; posed a &#8220;threat to the national security of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">United States<\/a> and international peace and security in the <a title=\"Persian Gulf\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_Gulf\">Persian Gulf<\/a> region.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"Human rights in Saddam Hussein's Iraq\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_rights_in_Saddam_Hussein%27s_Iraq\">brutal repression<\/a> of its civilian population.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq&#8217;s &#8220;capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against <a title=\"Iran\u2013Iraq War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_War\">other nations<\/a> and <a title=\"Al-Anfal Campaign\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al-Anfal_Campaign\">its own people<\/a>&#8220;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq&#8217;s hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"List of United States Presidential assassination attempts\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_United_States_Presidential_assassination_attempts#George_H._W._Bush\">1993 assassination attempt<\/a> on former President <a title=\"George H. W. Bush\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_H._W._Bush\">George H. W. Bush<\/a> and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the <a title=\"Iraqi no-fly zones\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraqi_no-fly_zones\">no-fly zones<\/a> following the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"1991 Gulf War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1991_Gulf_War\">1991 Gulf War<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Members of <a title=\"Al-Qaeda\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al-Qaeda\">al-Qaeda<\/a>, an organization bearing responsibility for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"September 11 attacks\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.713,-74.0135&amp;spn=0.05,0.05&amp;q=40.713,-74.0135 (September%2011%20attacks)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">attacks on the United States<\/a>, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq&#8217;s &#8220;continu[ing] to aid and harbor other <a title=\"Terrorism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terrorism\">international terrorist<\/a> organizations,&#8221; including anti-United States terrorist organizations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Iraq paid <a title=\"Bounty (reward)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bounty_%28reward%29\">bounty<\/a> to families of <a title=\"Suicide attack\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suicide_attack\">suicide bombers<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The <a title=\"Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Authorization_for_Use_of_Military_Force_Against_Terrorists\">efforts by the Congress and the President to fight terrorists<\/a>, and those who aided or harbored them.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The authorization by the <a title=\"United States Constitution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Constitution\">Constitution<\/a> and the <a title=\"United States Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Congress\">Congress<\/a> for the <a title=\"President of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_the_United_States\">President<\/a> to fight anti-United States terrorism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The governments in <a title=\"Turkey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkey\">Turkey<\/a>, <a title=\"Kuwait\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kuwait\">Kuwait<\/a>, and <a title=\"Saudi Arabia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saudi_Arabia\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> feared Saddam and wanted him removed from power.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Citing the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Iraq Liberation Act of 1998\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iraq_Liberation_Act_of_1998\">Iraq Liberation Act of 1998<\/a>, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the <a title=\"Saddam Hussein\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saddam_Hussein\">Saddam Hussein<\/a> regime and promote a <a title=\"Democracy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democracy\">democratic<\/a> replacement.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then we need to look at the Senators who voted for the war. No-Fly Zone by Saddam Hussein? It would have been nice if we had a viable, unbiased United Nations with the forces and power to handle the situation without using almost all American troops, but that was not the case. It was possible for Iraq to become a viable democracy aligned with western interests. That possibility was ended when no status of forces was reached, when the <span class=\"st\">Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki began persecuting minorities, and when President Obama withdrew all American troops. An America willing to be strong, to put pressure on the Prime Minister, and to leave a peacekeeping force would have made a difference. Unfortunately, when America refuses to be strong and lead, bad things happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The news coming out of Iraq is horrible.
