This post is based on two articles–one by the Editors at National Review<\/a> and one by Andrew McCarthy at National Review<\/a>. The article by the Editors explains why Benghazi<\/a> matters, and the article by Andrew McCarthy has some good advice for the Benghazi Select Committee.<\/p>\n

The article by the Editors sums up the reasons Benghazi matters:<\/p>\n

But the question here is not whether the administration\u2019s misleading statements in the wake of the attacks on U.S. installations in Egypt and Libya<\/a> are a political scandal in the style of President Nixon<\/a>\u2019s infamous burglary<\/a>; they aren\u2019t. But that the administration\u2019s misdeeds here seem to fall short of felony burglary hardly makes the matter a less serious one: The White House<\/a> misled the American<\/a> public about a critical matter of national interest, and it continues to practice deceit as the facts of the case are sorted out. That, to answer Hillary Clinton\u2019s callous question, is what difference it makes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrew McCarthy has some advice for the committee:<\/p>\n

I was a tough prosecutor but a fair one. If I were the special counsel, I\u2019d do my best to let the chips fall where they may even if it ended up showing that I\u2019d been wrong about things. But truly being fair means you never get to that point: You don\u2019t take an assignment that might disserve the assignment; you don\u2019t take an assignment under circumstances where fair-minded people could be persuaded to wonder whether you\u2019re pursuing the truth or pursuing your own agenda.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The facts of Benghazi are damning for the administration. The select committee should choose one of the dozens of excellent, ethical former prosecutors who have not publicly stated conclusive views on Benghazi. That would make the facts sing for themselves rather than create a target for the partisan demagoguery that could drown them out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Benghazi is important. The goal is to get to the bottom of what happened, why no one came to the aid of the Ambassador, how the video got blamed, and why has it been so hard to obtain government documents relating to the attack. Those are the questions America wants to have answered.<\/p>\n
