This anxiety was heightened Sunday after one of Putin’s closest former advisers told the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet<\/a> that the Kremlin<\/a> would seek “historical justice” by reclaiming Finland and ex-Soviet countries as part of an enlarged Russian Federation<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>“Putin’s view is that he protects what belongs to him and his predecessors,” wrote Andrei Illarionov<\/a>, according to a translation by the Moscow Times.<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n

“Parts of Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states<\/a> and Finland are states where Putin claims to have ownership,” said Illarionov, who is now a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C.,-based Cato Institute.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Finland is a member of the European Union. Theoretically, Europe would come to its defense if it were attacked. Finland was also the only European nation involved in World War II to avert a foreign occupation. Obviously we would all be better off if Russia were not flexing its muscles at Ukraine and Finland, but until America has a strong leader in the White House we can expect to see more of this.<\/p>\n
