WCVB.com<\/a> in Boston<\/a> is reporting that Maria von Trapp<\/a>, the last surviving member of the von Trapp family<\/a> who fled Nazi<\/a>-occupied of Austria<\/a> in 1938, has died at age 99. The play and movie “The Sound of Music<\/a>” were loosely based on a book written by Maria von Trapp’s stepmother, also Maria von Trapp.\u00a0 After they escaped from Austria, the musical family performed concerts in Europe<\/a> and America. In the early 1940’s the family settled in Vermont<\/a> and opened a ski lodge in Stowe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The death of Maria von Trapp is another reminder that the generation that fought and was impacted by World War II<\/a> is rapidly disappearing. We need to remember their courage and hold on to the principles they stood for.\u00a0 Maria’s father, Georg von Trapp<\/a>, was a captain in the Austrian Navy<\/a>. He had the wisdom to see where the country was going under the Nazis<\/a> and the courage to get his family out of there.<\/p>\n
