{"id":21949,"date":"2014-02-19T16:15:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T21:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21949"},"modified":"2014-02-19T16:15:39","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T21:15:39","slug":"i-think-someone-moved-the-goalposts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21949","title":{"rendered":"I Think Someone Moved The Goalposts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/iran-takes-tough-opening-stand-at-nuclear-talks-vows-not-to-dismantle-equipment\/2014\/02\/18\/8219fee8-98c7-11e3-80ac-63a8ba7f7942_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post <\/a>reported that as the latest talks with <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Iran\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=35.6833333333,51.4166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=35.6833333333,51.4166666667 (Iran)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Iran<\/a> began yesterday Iran pledged to never dismantle any equipment or facilities other countries believe could be used for the manufacture of atomic weapons. I may have missed something, but I thought the sanctions were lifted because Iran said it would discontinue its nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>On February 14th, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/feb\/14\/iran-get-more-20b-sanctions-relief-accuracy-obama-\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Times<\/a> reported that Iran was going to receive more than $20 billion in sanctions relief under the agreement reached. What in the world did Iran agree to do in return? Has Iran still agreed to it? It really doesn&#8217;t sound as if we got anything in return for lifting the sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Paul Mirengoff\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Mirengoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Paul Mirengoff<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2014\/02\/obama-enters-new-iranian-talks-with-one-hand-willingly-tied-behind-his-back.php\" target=\"_blank\">Power Line<\/a> posted a story today about the negotiations. He comments:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The latest round of negotiations regarding <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Nuclear program of Iran\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_program_of_Iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Iran\u2019s nuclear program<\/a> began yesterday. Iran\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated what has always been clear: \u201cDismantling [the] nuclear program is not on the agenda.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>What, then, is? As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/iran-takes-tough-opening-stand-at-nuclear-talks-vows-not-to-dismantle-equipment\/2014\/02\/18\/8219fee8-98c7-11e3-80ac-63a8ba7f7942_story.html\"> Washington Post<\/a> reports, the West seeks only \u201cto prevent Iran from <em>quickly<\/em> converting its nuclear program to weapons production or from hiding a parallel program.\u201d (emphasis added) This probably means \u201ca demand that advanced centrifuges for enriching uranium be destroyed or mothballed, and that Iran make changes to a nuclear facility under construction so it cannot produce plutonium.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Will Iran agree to this limited package? Not likely. As the Washington Post puts it, \u201cIran has signaled that it would oppose any such curbs.\u201d And a senior U.S. official acknowledged that \u201cwe have a very long way to go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At some point, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Presidency of Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Obama Administration<\/a> is going to have to realize that the only way Iran will ever give up its nuclear ambitions is if the west imposes crippling sanctions. Even if that were to happen, I doubt that Russia and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"China\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.9166666667,116.383333333&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=39.9166666667,116.383333333 (China)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">China<\/a> would honor those sanctions, so we would be right back where we started. However, the sanctions that were just lifted in the first round of negotiations were what brought Iran to the bargaining table. We need to put them back in place until the negotiations are done.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiating with Iran does not make the world safer&#8211;it makes the world more dangerous. The Iranians are simply stalling for time as their nuclear program progresses. It will be necessary at some point before Iran goes nuclear for someone to take out its nuclear facilities. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">America<\/a> will probably not do that&#8211;Israel will probably do it without asking America. That will result in mass destruction in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Middle East\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Middle East<\/a>.
