The supply of road salt in a few New Jersey communities is very low because of the recent snow storms. The problem in getting the road salt has nothing to do with its availability or proximity&#8211;the problem has to do with union workers.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"NASDAQ: RGCI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NASDAQ:RGCI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"googlefinance\">Townsquare Media<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/nj1015.com\/us-law-blocks-aid-as-road-salt-runs-out-in-nj\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Department of Homeland Security\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myattorneyhome.com\/Glossary\/department-of-homeland-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"myattorneyhome\">Department of Homeland Security (DHS)<\/a> denied the state\u2019s request for a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Waiver\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waiver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">waiver<\/a> of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Merchant Marine Act of 1920\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merchant_Marine_Act_of_1920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Jones Act<\/a>, a 1920 law requiring that all cargo and passengers moving between points in the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">United States<\/a> be transported on American vessels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A waiver would have allowed New Jersey to get the salt within days from a foreign transport in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Searsport, Maine\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=44.4583333333,-68.9241666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=44.4583333333,-68.9241666667 (Searsport%2C%20Maine)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Searsport, Maine<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>New Jersey Department of Transportation Spokesman Joe Dee told the <i>Washington Free Beacon<\/i> that a waiver from the Jones Act appears \u201cunlikely.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe were pursuing a waiver, but we\u2019ve been advised we wouldn\u2019t get one,\u201d Dee said. \u201cIt seems unlikely we will get it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Jersey City, New Jersey\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=40.711417,-74.06476&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=40.711417,-74.06476 (Jersey%20City%2C%20New%20Jersey)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Jersey City, New Jersey<\/a>, is expecting snow tonight and tomorrow morning, and then possibly more snow on Wednesday. This has been a very harsh winter in the northeast, and it is really silly to put people&#8217;s lives at risk because the salt needed does not happen to be on an American ship. There at least needs to be a waiver of the Jones Act granted.
