{"id":21701,"date":"2014-01-26T20:09:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T01:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21701"},"modified":"2014-01-26T20:09:12","modified_gmt":"2014-01-27T01:09:12","slug":"unions-and-crony-capitalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21701","title":{"rendered":"Unions And Crony Capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/hunterlewis\/2014\/01\/26\/crony-capitalism-in-america-public-sector-union-scandals-begin-to-leak-n1784752\/page\/full\">Townhall.com<\/a> posted an article today about some of the scandals that have been occurring in America&#8217;s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Public-sector trade union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public-sector_trade_union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Public Sector Unions<\/a>. Remember, the members of the Public Sector Unions are people whose benefits and salaries are paid by the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>The article lists several recent scandals. Here are a few:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Chicago\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=41.8819444444,-87.6277777778&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=41.8819444444,-87.6277777778 (Chicago)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Chicago<\/a> union leader takes a leave of absence in 1989 from the city\u2019s sanitation department, where he earned $40,000, to work for a union. He is then allowed to \u201cretire\u201d from the city at age 56 with $108,000 pension. (The rules say that the individual should waive a union pension to do this. In this case, the official reportedly does not waive the union pension. The city knows this, but grants the city pension anyway.)<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>16 psychiatrists working for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=37.0,-120.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=37.0,-120.0 (California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">California<\/a> are paid $400,000 or more. One of them, with a degree from an Afghan medical school, takes home $822,302<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>More than half the lifeguards working for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Newport Beach, California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=33.6166666667,-117.8975&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=33.6166666667,-117.8975 (Newport%20Beach%2C%20California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Newport Beach, CA<\/a> earn more than $150,000 in 2010. One earns $203,481. A lifeguard <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Trade union\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trade_union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">labor union<\/a> spokesman comments: \u201cWe have negotiated very fair and very reasonable salaries. . . . Lifeguard salaries here are well within the norm of other city employees.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many more examples listed in the article. This might be the reason many of our towns, cities and states are on the verge of bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The article reminds us of the relationship between <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Union dues\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_dues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">union dues<\/a> and political contributions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667 (United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">American Federation<\/a> of Teachers (AFT) collects $211 million in dues in 2010; the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"National Education Association\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">National Education Association<\/a> (NEA) $397 million. With state affiliates included, the total approaches $1 billion. The AFT president makes nearly half a million, and almost 600 officials at the two unions earn over $100,000. $297 million is donated to political campaigns over a decade\u2014with total political spending much higher. It is hard to say how high the spending really is because members do not receive complete information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8230;For the fifty states as a whole, unfunded public employee benefit liabilities are at least $1.26 trillion, according to the PEW Center on the states.<em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This information comes from a book entitled, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Crony capitalism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crony_capitalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Crony Capitalism<\/a> in America 2008-2012, Chapter 19, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Public sector\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_sector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Public Sector<\/a> Union Scandals Begin to Leak<\/span> by Hunter Lewis.
