{"id":21257,"date":"2013-12-17T17:00:33","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T22:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21257"},"modified":"2013-12-17T17:00:33","modified_gmt":"2013-12-17T22:00:33","slug":"breaking-faith-with-americas-wounded-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=21257","title":{"rendered":"Breaking Faith With America&#8217;s Wounded Veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/disabled-military-retirees-not-exempt-from-pension-cuts-in-budget-deal\/\">The Washington Free Beacon<\/a> is reporting today that disabled veterans will not be exempt from the pension cuts included in the budget deal currently being considered in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>The story reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The <i>Free Beacon<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/budget-deal-hits-military-retirees-with-pension-cuts-federal-retirees-untouched\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously reported<\/a> that military retirees under the age of 62 would receive 1 percentage point less in their annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the plan crafted by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States House Committee on the Budget\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_House_Committee_on_the_Budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">House Budget Committee<\/a> Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States Senate Committee on the Budget\" href=\"http:\/\/budget.senate.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Senate Budget Committee<\/a> Chairman <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Patty Murray\" href=\"http:\/\/www.murray.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Patty Murray<\/a> (D., Wash.).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The section of the U.S. code that has been altered also applies to disabled servicemembers, many of whom have been wounded in combat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Jeff Sessions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sessions.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Sen. Jeff Sessions<\/a> (R., Ala.), ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, called the change \u201cunthinkable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cIt has been asserted that the controversial change to military retirees\u2019 pensions affects those who are \u2018working-age\u2019 and \u2018still in their working years,\u2019 with the clear suggestion being that these individuals are able to work,\u201d Sessions said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s why I was deeply troubled when my staff and I discovered that even individuals who have been wounded and suffered a service-related disability could see their pensions reduced under this plan.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cIt is unthinkable that this provision would be included in a deal that spares current civilian workers from the same treatment,\u201d he said. \u201cAn equivalent amount of savings and more can be easily found, and I hope the Senate will move to address the unbalanced treatment of our servicemembers before considering the legislation any further.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is simply obscene, and it really bothers me that I haven&#8217;t seen this provision commented on in any major news outlet.<\/p>\n<p>The article further reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rep. Ryan told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/print\/blogs\/ryan-defends-reduction-cost-living-adjustments-early-military-retirees_770921.html\"><i>Weekly Standard<\/i><\/a> that the changes are appropriate because servicemen and women who retire in their 40s after serving for two decades are still young enough to maintain a job.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cWe give them a slightly smaller adjustment for inflation because\u00a0they\u2019re still in their working years and in most cases earning another paycheck,\u201d Ryan said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sens. <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Roger Wicker\" href=\"http:\/\/wicker.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Roger Wicker<\/a> (R., Miss.), <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Lindsey Graham\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lgraham.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Lindsey Graham<\/a> (R., S.C.), <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Jim Inhofe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inhofe.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">James Inhofe<\/a> (R., Okla.), and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Kelly Ayotte\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ayotte.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Kelly Ayotte<\/a> (R., N.H.) have said they are <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/report-budget-plan-could-cost-service-members-124000-in-retirement-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\">opposed<\/a> to the deal because it cuts the benefits of military retirees, while not imposing equal cuts to federal civilian workers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul Ryan is clearly on the wrong side of this issue. When anyone currently in the military joined the military, they were promised a certain pension if they retired after so many years of active duty or if they were retired due to injury. This is a breach of contract as well as a disgrace. The reason the cuts went to the military and not the federal civilian workers is that the federal civilian workers have unions&#8211;our military does not.
