Until now. Technological advances and the discovery of a cover-up on an ancient map have let researchers unearth new clues that may help bring an end to the mystery of America&#8217;s lost colony.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is amazing to me how modern technology can impact archeology. Using ultraviolet light, scientists examined a map painted by explorer <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"John White (colonist and artist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_White_%28colonist_and_artist%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">John White<\/a> between 1585-1586.<\/p>\n<p>The article reports their findings:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The map was analyzed by scientists at the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"British Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=51.519459,-0.126931&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=51.519459,-0.126931 (British%20Museum)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">British Museum<\/a>, who discovered a small red-and-blue symbol.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;Our best idea is that parts of [<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sir Walter\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_Walter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Sir Walter<\/a>] <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Raleigh Haberdasher\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raleigh_Haberdasher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Raleigh&#8217;s<\/a> exploration in North America were a state secret, and the map &#8216;cover-up&#8217; was an effort to keep information from the public and from foreign agents,&#8221; historian and principal investigator Eric Klingelhofer of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mercer University\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.8291666667,-83.6486111111&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=32.8291666667,-83.6486111111 (Mercer%20University)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Mercer University<\/a> in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Macon, Georgia\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=32.8347222222,-83.6516666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=32.8347222222,-83.6516666667 (Macon%2C%20Georgia)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Macon, Ga.<\/a>, told <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/12\/131208-roanoke-lost-colony-discovery-history-raleigh\/#close-modal\" target=\"_blank\">National Geographic<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/external-link.png\" \/>, which partially funded the effort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Historians believe that the symbol may have been the location of a fort the settlers fled to, running from violence or disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using magnetometers and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), scientists explored the area under the patch on the map. The discovered a pattern at that location that indicates possible wooden structures about three feet below the surface.<\/p>\n<p>The next step will be an archeological dig.
