{"id":20946,"date":"2013-11-10T17:28:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-10T22:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=20946"},"modified":"2013-11-10T17:28:01","modified_gmt":"2013-11-10T22:28:01","slug":"the-impact-of-voter-identification-laws-on-voter-turnout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rightwinggranny.com\/?p=20946","title":{"rendered":"The Impact Of Voter Identification Laws On Voter Turnout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/363548\/voter-id-dent-wasnt-roger-clegg-hans-von-spakovsky\">National Review<\/a> posted an article about the impact of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Voter ID laws\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voter_ID_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">voter ID laws<\/a> on a recent election in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Texas\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=31.0,-100.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=31.0,-100.0 (Texas)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"geolocation\">Texas<\/a>. The article quotes a a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"The New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">New York Times<\/a><\/span> <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Headline\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Headline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">headline<\/a> Thursday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/07\/us\/politics\/texas-stringent-voter-id-law-makes-a-dent-at-polls.html?_r=0\">stating<\/a>: \u201cTexas\u2019 Stringent Voter ID Law Makes a Dent at the Polls.\u201d However, the facts cited in the article in the New York Times does not seem to support the headline.<\/p>\n<p>There are four so-called victims of the voter ID law named in the article, but all of them were given the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Suffrage\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suffrage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">right to vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The article at National Review further quotes the New York Times article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>It does, however, note, \u201cOfficials also said there was little traffic at the offices set up by the state to provide free voter-ID documents for those without another approved form of <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Party identification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Party_identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">identification<\/a>.\u201d So, in other words, the state had conscientiously prepared for the contingency of people needing voter-ID documents, and had set up offices to provide them for free. That\u2019s a good thing, right? And what\u2019s more, it turns out that there was really no problem after all. Contrary to the hysterical claims of those opposing voter-ID requirements, there apparently are not large numbers of Texas\u00a0voters who lack identification.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The article concludes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Texas\u2019s secretary of state, who might know something about all this, is quoted belatedly as follows: \u201cThis was our first statewide election with a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Photo identification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photo_identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">photo ID<\/a> requirement in place, and it was smooth, secure and successful.\u201d Somehow, that pithy summary was not quite up to snuff for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Times<\/span>\u2019s headline writer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider the things you have to show identification for. If you want to enter any government building, you have to show identification. If you want to sign up for any <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Government\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">government program<\/a>, you have to show identification. If you want to board an airplane, you have to show identification.
