For those of you who watched Seinfeld<\/a>, you remember the character on the show called the “Soup Nazi<\/a>” who epitomized what non-New Yorkers think of New Yorkers. As someone who went to school in New York<\/a> City and spent a lot of time there, I loved the Seinfeld show. The show captured a lot of the ambiance of New York City–both good and bad.<\/p>\n

Yesterday Marta H. Mossburg posted an article at the American Spectator <\/a>comparing the behavior of the Obama Administration during the government shutdown<\/a> to the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

Take the park rangers who last week locked under armed guard a group of senior citizens that included visitors from Japan, Australia, Canada and the U.S. inside Old Faithful Inn<\/a> in Yellowstone National Park<\/a>. Gordon Hodgson<\/a>, the guide of the 41-person tour group, told the Livingston, Montana<\/a> Enterprise that officials told him they could stay at the hotel but could not do anything.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…According to a report in USA<\/a> Today<\/em>, the Parks Service is now allowing veterans to visit memorials, but \u201cnon-veterans not practicing free speech are still barred from the memorials and mall.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who gets to decide who is practicing free speech or not? Are there \u201cessential\u201d federal employees assigned to the task?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What American law allows this?<\/p>\n

The article concludes:<\/p>\n

The ironic thing is that being mean is not helping the administration politically. Republicans are taking the most blame for the government shutdown according to polls, but President Barack Obama<\/a>\u2019s approval rating is only 37 percent, hardly a PR victory for him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ultimately the only thing he is proving through his nasty tactics is that he governs like the \u201cSoup Nazi\u201d of \u201cSeinfeld\u201d dispenses soup \u2014 arbitrarily and rudely. Shutdown or no shutdown, \u201cNo soup for you!\u201d is not a way to run a country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All of us need to remember the Soup Nazi the next time we vote.<\/p>\n
