Fox News<\/a> reported today that because of the government shutdown<\/a> the Pentagon<\/a> will not be paying death benefits to families of fallen soldiers.<\/p>\n

The article reports:<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, as a result of the shutdown, we do not have the legal authority to make death gratuity payments at this time,” said Lt. Cmdr.<\/a> Nate Christensen, a Defense Department<\/a> spokesman. “However, we are keeping a close eye on those survivors who have lost loved ones serving in the Department of Defense.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The good news is that the House of Representatives<\/a> is planning to vote Wednesday on a bill to restore funding for these payments.<\/p>\n

The article further reports:<\/p>\n

Adding further insult, the families will have to pay for their own travel to Dover<\/a>.\u00a0That’s a bill the Pentagon also says it can’t pay because of the partial shutdown. <\/strong><\/p>\n

…After the ceremony at Dover on Wednesday, the families will fly to their home states to conduct private funerals. That’s also an expense the Pentagon says it can no longer pay due to the stalemate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All of this brings to mind a quote from an article posted on Sunday at rightwinggranny.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can,\u201d an angry Park Ranger told the Washington Times<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s disgusting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a government attack on the American people. It needs to be stopped, and the people responsible need to be voted out of office.<\/p>\n
