I have serous doubts as to whether the current administration in Washington<\/a> respects our military, and I also have serious doubts as to their level of respect for our military veterans<\/a>. This administration has attempted to cut medical benefits for veterans, and I suspect that sometime in the near future they will attempt to cut retirement benefits. One of the latest executive actions is an example of the lack of respect for veterans and their traditions.<\/p>\n

Yesterday the Daily Caller<\/a> reported that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)<\/a> is altering some of the regulations it puts on the American Legion<\/a>. The IRS is changing a 13-part section<\/a> of Part 4, Chapter 76 of the Internal Revenue Manual pertaining to \u201cveterans\u2019 organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The article in the Daily Caller states:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe IRS now requires American Legion posts to maintain dates of service and character of service records for all members\u2026 The penalty for not having the required proof of eligibility is, apparently, $1,000 per day,\u201d the American Legion stated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

…\u201cOn the heels of Americans<\/a>\u2019 anger over revelations that the IRS intentionally targeted certain groups, it has been brought to my attention that the IRS is now turning their sights toward our nation\u2019s veterans,\u201d Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran<\/a> said. \u201cThe IRS seems to be auditing veteran service organizations by requiring private member military service forms.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

…The American Legion, headquartered in Indianapolis, was founded in 1919 as a social and support group for veterans returning from World War I. It is now one of the leading nonpartisan forces lobbying for veterans rights.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Notice that this new rule was in no way approved of or passed by Congress<\/a>–it was done in the Executive Branch<\/a>. I think it is time for Congress to find its spine and begin to rein in the Executive Branch. President Obama<\/a> and his minions are becoming more like a king and his court than the President of a representative republic.<\/div>\n
