H.R. 2417 SHIELD-Act Fact Sheet<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

EMP Commission and DOD, DHS<\/a>, DOE<\/a>, NAS all report that the electric infrastructure is highly vulnerable to a man-made or naturally occurring EMP event.<\/strong>
\no <\/strong>The consequences of an EMP event can be catastrophic.<\/p>\n

DOD relies overwhelmingly on the commercial grid for its operations<\/strong>
\no <\/strong> 99% of DOD electricity is from sources outside DOD installations
\no<\/strong> 85% of DOD electricity is from sources outside DOD control<\/p>\n

EMP events are likely to occur<\/strong>
\no<\/strong> Rogue states continue to develop ways to attack the US<\/a> with EMP producing
\nweapons. (North Korea<\/a> and Iran<\/a> especially)
\no<\/strong> A Geomagnetic storm<\/a> or severe space weather is possible and solar maximum<\/a>\u00a0 (the normal period of greatest solar activity in the 11 year solar cycle of the Sun<\/a>)\u00a0 is approaching (including a recent CME<\/a> near-impact)<\/p>\n

An EMP incident is likely to occur at some time in the future. This is one item Congress<\/a> should actually be spending money on. An EMP can be a naturally occurring event caused by solar activity or it can be caused by a nuclear explosion above the earth at a certain atmosphere.<\/p>\n

This is a subject that needs to come up during the Town Hall meetings Congress is holding during its August recess.<\/p>\n
